upgrading from stock to 19mm rear sway bar

my car is an '86 base model

how much of a difference is this going to make in handling? is this too big for a mainly stock car with pretty much the only mods being DTSS eliminator bushings, racing beat springs, and KYB shocks?
someone told me it will understeer if i install this bar but i dont see how that could happen..anyone care to explain/elaborate on this?

No it will not understeer more. It will help the handling and eliminate some understeer.

ah i just read an excellent writeup on what exactly sway bars do and how they actually do it...

do you think a bar this large would cause too much oversteer? as it is right now i have absolutely no problem with oversteer, just slight understeer.

Depends on how stiff your upgraded springs and shocks are. On my car with the Tein Super Drifts I run no rear bar at all. (Car was used for HPDE on race tracks, not drifting. It was very neutral with that setup. It's retired from track use now though.)

When you really start stiffening up the chassis you have to worry about weight transfer and loss of traction in the rear during braking.

the manufacturer claims the rear springs are actually slightly less stiff than stock, but the front are much stiffer. this seems accurate as the front can be pretty harsh but the rear end is not so bad on bumps.

It will not understeer, I think it'll be perfect because the springs are probably super soft in the rear. I know the GC standard setup is 375lb/in F and 250 rear but it depends on the rates of the RB springs which I'm not familiar with.

It will definitely not understeer but the amount of oversteer will be dependent on the alignment on the car and the wheel/tire setup.

never had an alignment done...the only thing i notice is the rear has a slight amount of camber from the 1" drop of the RB springs

the site says stock rear springs have a "90" spring rate and the RB ones are 80.

all things being equal, generally a larger rear sway bar should reduce your understeer or possibly result in oversteer.

the alignment is just neutral or whatever the tire shops would normally set it at. has a little bit of camber from the springs like mentioned
wheels are stock 626 wheels (15x6?) with 205/60's on them.

It will be perfect then. If you like turning I would get some camber plates in the front and dial in some negative camber.

yes definitely :P thats the only thing i plan on modifying this car for. i know its not a rocket, and never will be without serious modifications i will probably never do, but i like the crisp sensitive handling. once i put in the DTSS eliminators it should drive like a new car
