Why??? No thanks. You could weld 90* elbows to your standard muffler just for show and it'd still function better.

more bends=less flow

might be ok on a baby honda engine...but a turbo rotary? nope...

I don't know of anybody who has tried this on an RX-7. Mugen does not make one for an RX-7, and I assume that they have a patent to keep anybody else from making one. A similar concept is used by Corsa, but they don't make an exhaust for an RX-7 either.

It is a combination of muffling and noise-cancelling. The exhaust flows through the glass-pack muffler, and then it passes through the other half of the glass-pack muffler in the opposite direction. The glass packing absorbs some of the high-frequency sound, and the opposite-direction exhaust frequencies help cancel the lower-frequency sound.

@Evil Aviator Thank you for the great explanation.

I have heard various times here on the forum that rotaries produce high exhaust heat where it would burn the fiberglass in a "glasspack" muffler. Is this true?

Just curious.

I put a knockoff Mugen twin loop on my old B16 honda. It sounded great and quiet, no rasp. The vid above sounds like **** though.

But...

What a rotary flows and what a n/a honda motor flow is night and day.

There's better exhaust options for our cars.

Why would you want to take out the lower frequencies? Or is it to basically muffle as much noise as possible instead of making a 'pleasant' tone?

Absolutely, I've seen it myself. Though to be clear I don't think the fg burns like paper, but it definitely doesn't stay in the can.

It depends on how the muffler is made more than what is in it. Yes, most of the cheapie glasspacks on the market will get blown out quickly from the pressure and/or heat, and even the Flowmaster muffler will get its spot-welded baffles blown-out by rotary engine exhaust. Non-turbo rotary engines have an EGT around 1700F, and this tends to melt fiberglass packing. A lot of the rotary-powered GT cars used lava rock packing - not gonna burn that up, lol. I don't know whether a Mugen muffler designed for a Honda would work or not, but you are welcome to try. Personally, I would rather use a muffler that I know will work... Racing Beat, Apexi, HKS, GReddy, Pacesetter, Borla, Rotary Performance, etc. Also, for a non-turbo engine make sure you get a non-turbo muffler. The "turbo" mufflers are designed for turbocharged cars in which a lot of the noise is soaked up by the turbine, and will be too loud on a non-turbo car.

It helps keep the Hondas from making that annoying droning noise that you hear from the ones with the regular "fart pipe" exhaust. I would imagine that it would make a rotary engine sound a little better too, but I am just guessing.

Just please install your exhaust correctly, whatever you do. I hate it when they rattle because some guy don't know how to put it on straight.
