Turning stock TMIC into water to air intercooler
#33
This idea is as old as the hills. Been done lots of times. Here's one in an RX-4.

Several years ago BDC had a stock top mount that he turned into an air/water unit. It was very crude. the welds were poor and he constantly was fixing leaks on it with JB Weld! He had fiberglassed in the storage area behind the driver's seat to turn it into a large water tank. He had a small Hyundai radiator up front as a heat exchanger and used a boat bilge pump for water circulation.
I remember about 7 or 8 years ago, the night I met him, he poured a 10 lb bag of ice into the tank and filled it up. We took it out for a drive and he was ragging on it for nearly an hour. After we got back to his house, he opened the hood and the damn intercooler had frost on it!!! It was not cold outside at all. This was Dallas in the early fall. I was highly impressed to say the least. He had no issues driving around with it everyday. He didn't use ice all the time though. He dyno'd 426 rwhp using that setup.
PM him to ask him about it sometime. I was in disbelief.

very impressive...
I never considered the fact that the I/C wouldn't be relieing on air flow....you could really insulate the crap out of it.
I suppose you could also engineer something inside the car...as rotary god's quoted setup....except perhaps using something like the existing evap. for the A/C and an additional fan....

Here's an old thread with a lot of info from BDC on his set-up.

just a thought you could possibly cool the water using pressure and pelier elements. Only thing is you would need to heatsink the peltiers. But yea that could easily get you down to a VEERY low water temp.

One thing that people need to remember is that he had a pretty large water tank. Most air/water setups use smaller tanks. The smaller the tank, the faster the water in it heats up. The largerthe tank the slower it heats up but the heavier it is. Water weighs about 8 lbs per gallon.

wouldn't it be easier to do an ice water injection system for the FMIC? a tank with icewater in a bin, a small pump, lines and a sprayer kit?
wouldn't THAT be as efficient and less time consuming?

This system would fit easier and block less air from the radiator.
Are IC sprayers are that effective?
Still would have the advantage of less air volume in the intercooler and piping.
