Is this turbo rx7 worth buying ?
Here the ad description -
87 Mazda rx7 turbo 2, car starts runs for a few min then dies. Let it set for a little bit and start again. Body has 108000, engine has less than 10000 and it's a street port 13b from JDM. Body needs a little tlc on the passenger side.
He's asking $1500 for it and i dont really think he'll budge, he said he'd trade for my car but i dont want to trade if it's not going to make it back to my place which is a 700 mile drive from where he is >.< (if this goes to show how bad i want a turbo rotary)
He says it will start but is dumping so much fuel it fouls out the plugs, he has no papers to provide to prove its a jdm motor, i really dont see why a jdm motor would be ported in the first place.
What im trying to do is go there, and fix whatever the problem is and drive it back to where i am now, which is a pretty far drive.
What would cause this issue ? I was thinking he has the spark plugs connected wrong, possibly vacuum leaks, could be a number of things...but it does start...im just hoping the reason is because of fuel , not low compression, or running on 1 rotor...
the guy who has the car seems like he knows little to nothing about cars so its like asking a 14 year old whats wrong with it.

from JDM? sounds bogus. unless hes got paper work to prove that the engine is legit assume its not. JDMs are almost all stock, having one ported sounds like an excuse to cover it running crappy.
these cars factory engine management is super sensitive to vac leaks, but i would bring a compression tester with you if your serious about the car.
if he doesnt know anything about the car, start grilling him about it. he'll ether understand that he cant fool you and give you an honest price or get offended and not sell you the car. If the latter then he's probably trying to screw someone into a junk engine'd car.
if you do go to look at it, s5 engines are mostly what are imported from japan so having a S5 engine swap is the most likely. one sure shot to tell if it is an s5 engine is that it will have threaded bungs above the trailing spark plug holes for a knock sensor. s4 (87-88) do not have these as they have different rotor housings.

Weird I was just looking at that car on craigslist haha. I'd save your money for a nicer one closer to ya. It needs a fender, passenger door and quarter work on top of its running issue.

I would personally pass this one up. From the sounds of it, it's a run-down turbo rotary that has probably had several careless, clueless, ignorant and probably youthful owners. It's also nearly a thousand miles away, and currently doesn't run worth a ****. You've never seen the car in person.
I really don't think I need to tell you that this is a catastrophically bad idea...

The red one in harrison MO? Stay far away. It's been listed on/off for a while now.
Just south there is a real clean stock white base 87 NA for 2 grand which they can go lower (sooner gone the better type deal.) Car looks fantastic, nice supporting mods and they are throwing in some extra parts uninstalled mods which you could sell for a chunk of the cash needed for a T2 swap.

to the OP, expecting to fix this car in a reasonable amount of time at the seller's place and drive it 700 miles home is not going to happen, and that's even assuming the engine is still good. Frankly the owner sounds like he's either a complete idiot or lying to cover up something. When buying an engine he would definetly have paperwork/bill of lading and if not it shouldn't be too hard for him to call up the importer and have it verified. My guess is most likely it was a "local or DIY" rebuild and either wasn't rebuilt properly or blown and he's just making excuses saying, "it's a jdm." Like you said if it was an original jdm engine it wouldn't be ported. My guess is that the engine is crap and I wouldn't even consider paying more then 1k for it, and that's assuming there aren't any missing parts or body issues. No way I would trade a running car for that...if the owner is willing to BS you about the engine what else is he "forgetting" to tell you?....
*oh and regarding to the other posts. If it is an s4 and has no moonroof, manual window, and manual ps rack it is a base, NOT a gtu-s. The GTU-S model was made in 89-90 only. In addition a gtu-s has the 16" s5 t2 wheels. If you have any other ?'s about a gtu-s feel free to ask.....i own one
