Turbo rebuild WON'T take to4 parts??

Ok, just talked to a local guy who rebuilds turbos.. he says that for the hitachi ht-18 turbo, the majority of to4 parts don't fit! He said the bearings might, but the carbon seal, rings, thrust plate, etc, won't fit.
He said to dissasemble it, and bring it in to see whta they could match up.
The thing is, I don't know a lot about the internals of turbos, so I don't even know what I need!
My turbo spins fine, has no bent fins, doesn't have a bent shaft, it just has a lot of in-out, and side play and is leaking oil. (smoke!)

So- what parts do I need?? What seals? Bearings? Whatever.. like I said, I dont' know much.

Thanks!

The guy has no idea what he is talking about.
EVERYTHING is used if you get the carbon seal kit.

The T04 rebuild kit typical comes with:
carbon seal
thrust bearing
center oil bearing x2
front spacer
compressor housing o-ring soft seal
turbine shaft compression ring
ALL parts are used on the Hitachi HT-18.

Thanks Ted.
The local guy says he doesn't have a "kit" per se, but sells the parts induvidually.
Would I need all these parts to remedy my problem?(loose and smoking).

That might work out for you.

If you can disassemble the turbo and inspect the parts, you can figure what exact parts you need to replace.

If the turbo is puking oil through the compressor housing, the carbon seal is the most likely culprit.  If you can inspect the carbon seal, it's most likely cracked or chipped.

If the turbo is puking oil through the turbine section, the turbine compression ring is most likely bad.

You did mention excessive shaft play, and this could mean the front spacer or center main shaft bearings or thrust bearing (or all of the above) could be bad and need to be replaced.

If the turbo is original or unknown amount of miles, it's a good idea to replace the center shaft bearings and the thrust bearing at the same time.  These are most likely worn past spec; if you're going to get the turbo torn down, you might as well replace all these parts.

Back from the dead to HAUNT you guys! heh, proof that I searched i spose. Where can you find a t04 rebuild kit? particularily a site that will ship to canada.

Theres not much information on this at all, and paying someone 450$ that I feel I can do myself just don't go well with me.
I searched google for a t04 rebuild kit, but didn't find anything, only some ebay items, and I don't want to buy through ebay.

There are NAPA and Partsource locations in my city, think they may be able to order one in?

thx

Some of it will work, but that pic shows a dynamic seal, you'll need a carbon seal. The ones from ebay aren't bad, infact one guy in particular is knowledgable and seals Garrett parts, not knock off's.

So how can we build our stock turbos to spec that lets say bnr uses to be good for 350 hp?? are the housings different or are the wheels larger?? Clipped? ported. Im just curious if you are like me and have an extra turbo lying around would it be possible to build the turbo like bnr turbos for less than 800 or what???

Alright, turbo's are a simple design, they are relatively easy to rebuild/build I redid mine when I lost trust in local turbo builder and since then I have done quite a few.
Now a to4 rebuild kit that includes the following WILL fit in the HT18 Turbos.
carbon seal
compressor housing o-ring
turbine shaft compression ring
thrust bearing
center oil bearing (2 of these are needed)
front spacer

No make sure you mark your compressor with it's current position on the shaft so that when you reistall everything the ballance will not be off. Meaning you will not have to pay 50-100 to get it ballanced again.

As for upgrading the turbo that requires alot more, you need a new CHA that will bolt to the stock Turbine housing, you will need a backing plate and compressor, as well as the corresponding compressor housing, you will also need to modify the wastegate actuator's positionas it will not longer sit in the proper location. You will also need to Port the New wastegate.
Here is the thing, Rebuilding turbos is relatively simple, It is time consuming but easy, you just have to make sure you take the time to prelub all of the parts correctly and unsure they go back in the exact same position that you took them out. You will have no problems.
Now just to reiterate this is not for the light hearted, DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU ARE 100% CONFIDENT IN YOUR ABILITIES!

I am not even going to bother answering this question anymore because if you need to ask these questions you do not have the ability to do it properly
But it is usually a t04 60-1 for stage 3.

So, where can you find a rebuild kit other than ebay. You also didn't mention wich parts 'wouldn't' work and how to get them.

But thanks for the info so far! REted never answers my PM's ever! friggen annoing, I was hoping that I'd get his input on this as well, but jreynish you helped me a shitload! thanks!
