Turbo rebuild kit?

I'm looking for a turbo rebuild/repair kit for my turbo clearly, question I don't know the answer to is, which one do I search for as far as what turbo, manufacturer, etc.

What I have is a '88 S4 t2 the turbo is a 60mm hybrid turbo from RotaryShack. I believe that turbo has the factory exhaust housing and center section, but the compressor housing and some internals have been changed to T4.

http://www.rotaryshack.com/images/big/turbo2-B.jpg - picture
http://www.rotaryshack.com/turbos.html - link for turbo

Turbo spools and holds boost, little to no side-to-side play in shaft, in/out play is bad, smokes like a mother haha!

Any ideas or possibilities to point me in the right direction for a kit?

Thanks!

I dont know if this will help but there are two places I know that will rebiuld your turbo for you at relatively low cost. The one in Houston(turbochargers.com) quoted me $335 to rebuild my turbo. I dont know where you would get a rebuild kit for your turbo but these guys will.
Hope this helps!

looks like a precision turbo backing plate, only someone who can recognize the turbo will be able to help you with getting parts for it. it also depends if the CHRA was upgraded as well or not as to what parts you will need.

the stock CHRA uses Garrett T3 rebuild components which are fairly common and most turbo rebuilders stock the kits. the parts that generally fail is the thrust bearing and the rear carbon seal ring.

Ask RotaryShack!

I know RA sells rebuild kits for the stock turbo, though I'm not sure if they would still work in a hybrid setup.

internal seals will still be typical hitachi ht18
http://gpopshop.com/hitachi-turbo-rebuild-kits

instead of that, go with a basic t3 rebuild kit
http://gpopshop.com/garrett-t3-t4-t3t4-kits-2

take your turbo apart first so you can find out what kind of seal it uses on the compressor plate, and than go from there.

the stock turbo uses the 4 piece carbon seal for the compressor side, most Garrett turbos use the dynamic type of seal.

his is a hybrid, so it will depend on the seal that the compressor plate uses

yes, but likely it is a dynamic seal. at any rate it should go to a professional turbo shop.

Okay, so the basic t3 kit here:

http://gpopshop.com/products-page/re...basic-t3-kit1/

I'm not all too familiar with the inner components of a turbo, but I am able to do repairs if needed. How do I determine which seal I need, as far as the Dynamic or Carbon seal?

Thank you for the input and help so far everyone!

Perhaps I was a little vague when I said that haha! I figured I had to tear it apart first to know for sure, but what is the difference between the two? Do they look different, shape, etc.?

Oh okay! Cool deal, my fault for not seeing that haha! Well, as soon as this rain lets off, guess I'll have to tear into this thing!

Okay, finally got my turbo apart. Ran into many issues with a friend's car that took up my workspace. Anyways, got it apart and inspected some of the parts. Both wheels appear to be in good condition with no broken/bent fins. The exhaust housing has no visible damage/scuffs/scratches. The compressor side has some very slight scuffing on the outer side, and what appears to be cracks in the journal where the shaft rides in.

The rebuild kit I believe I would need is going to be the T3/T4 kit with carbon seals, I will provide pictures for verification of the damage and what I believe to be the carbon seals.

One major question that I have that has me as well as others I have asked stumped. I'm currently running Rtek 1.7 with 550primaries and 770 secondaries with all available bolt-ons. If I cannot salvage the turbo I have, 60trim hybrid turbo, would there be a huge effect on the performance of the vehicle if I were to downgrade to a 57trim Garrett? I'm unsure if this change in size would effect the A/F ratio. Any ideas?

Thanks guys/girls!

I haven't seen one with a 270° bearing and dynamic seal yet.... that's interesting.

Your turbo is screwed. You're going to definitely need a new back plate, no doubt. No seal in existence will seal against that cracked piece of ****. The compressor wheel is probably shot too, but I can't tell from the pics. If the wheel hit the housing, it's done for. The compressor housing might be ok, but once again I can't tell by the pics.

First thing first, get a caliper and measure the dimensions of the compressor wheel. I'm not sure what the whole 60mm thing is, but if you measure the inducer and exducer on the compressor wheel, you can source one out. Rotaryshack says the backplate is custom. Good luck there. Might just need to call them and ask for prices for components... if they sell them. Another option is to get a T4 backplate and see if you can get it machined to fit the proper size wheel.

Then you're going to need to order a wheel. I found greensource on ebay sells decent wheels with a large inventory (so long as you're not a jackass like me when building turbos ) The rebuild kit you'll probably want is from Gpopshop.com. Get the basic garrett t3 with a dynamic seal.
