Turbo Questions. Hot side, back plate etc..

Whats up guys... need your help again!

#1 Back plate on the turbo.. I recieved my new turbo with the back plate loose so one could port the wastegate.. My question, is there supposed to be a gasket between the turbo and the backplate?

#2 on the backplate there are some numbers that are raised. I ground down the "8" so the wastegate can open further. Is this a safe thing to do? When the wastegate is open all the way it used to hit where the 8 was so i ground the 8 off so the wastegate could open about 1mm further.

#3 on my rebuilt turbo that i recieved the exhaust housing where it bolts up to the manifold has a few cracks and could possibly ruin the gasket. Is it easy to switch hot sides? Is it just the 5 or 6 13 mm nuts? And its pretty straight forward? Or does it get pretty hairy when i take the hotside off from the compressor side?

Thanks alot for any input!
Evan

i beleive that thre wasnt a gasket between the turbo and the back plate. There should be 4 bolts holding down the backplate and 3 studs for the downpipe. the grinding of the 8 shouldnt be a problem.

very easy to switch

but you have to remove the WG arm before, remember the exact positioning of the hotside to avoid fitment issues when installing it and BE CAREFUL NOT TO MESS WITH THE TURBINE WHEEL WHEN YOU LIFT IT UP!!!! bending or breaking a fin ( they're pretty sturdy I know but... ) would throw your rotating assembly outta balance, which leads to a shortened life for your turbo

for the cracked hotside... I can say that the 5 TII turbos I saw had them cracked...

It all comes down to your judgement if it's too much.

Good luck finding a perfect one!

hope that helped,

No, no gasket.
The mating surfaces are machined flat, and this is normally good enough for a good deal when everything is tightened down.

It doesn't matter either way.

Yes, it's pretty straight-forward.
Just be careful when removing and reinstalling the new housing.
Try not to contact the turbine blades during these procedures!
