Turbo engine?

I have a 1988 Rx7 Convertible. I'd like to have a turbo engine put in my car. Is it a hard thing to to in my car? what kind of turbo engine would be best? And how much power can I expect?
Also are there any good sites I can get a complete engine swap from? Any info or help would be great. Thanks

Check the faq and definitely search. This has been covered countless amounts of times. Just letting you know now, and don't be surprised to get a handful of people in here flaming you for this. Just warning. Good luck with the car though.

I read that I have an S4 so I need S4 parts. I also read in the search that a T2 is a good swap. How is this for a swap? Has anyone ever used this? How does it compare to the T2?

usually the engine comes with everything you need. maybe some motor mounts but you have those already.maybe get poly urethane mounts or what ever.

ask the person/company who sells the motor. they can tell you what you need.

Hows the reliability with those turbo motors on these cars? Will there be a huge difference in power over stock? Will 205hp be enough to drift? Will my car be quick then? I've never rode in one of these turbo before.

i slide around in my n/a all the time so power isn't needed to drift, what i see as a problem is your wanting to do it in a convertible which is quite a bit heavier than a couple. i'm not saying you can't drift it but it is going to be more difficult. a brand new 13bt motor might get you 100k miles, a rebuilt one considerably less. yes it will be a faster . you said you need a 5 speed tranny so your automatic right now? that'll make the swap alittle bit harder because you'll have to fabricate brackets to mount the manual transmission. all of this has been done hundreds of times before so yes it's possible but your still not gonna get the same perfomance you would if you did it to a coupe. all this will cost you somewhere around 5k

The swap I'm getting comes with a transmission.(All parts listed above). But it doesn't come with a drive shaft, or rear end. Got a link for this stuff? And is the turbo swap worh all this? Will there be a huge difference in power?

oh sorry i didn't notice the link you had before, you wanna buy a jspec motor

more bad news, those motors need to be rebuilt, yes they say there good motors, but in most cases they have lower compression than desired. which in it self is 1.3k for the rebuild kit i believe.

you'll need to find a driveshaft and rear end for sale somewhere.

so 1500 for the jspec motor
500 for shipping
1300 rebuild
250 driveshaft and rearend

in the end you probably won't be happy with the HP from the stock turbo setup so you'll drop another 1k and 500 on a fmic setup.

i think pretty much everyone who drives a n/a aspires to do this eventually.

Mabey it's not really worth all that for turbo. Are these cars really that bad for power stock? I'm buying the car of off my good friend and I haven't even drove it yet.

Thumbs up

NYRX7Kid, I think it's awesome that you want to drift a turbo convertible. The actual conversion isn't that difficult and there are alot of guys on this site who have done the conversion including myself who can help you along the way. This swap is totally worth doing. It's like a totally different car after doing the conversion, tons more power and you will also join the small handful of guys who have turbo convertible rx7's in the US(best part)!

In addition to the sensors that will come with the engine, you will also need to buy a boost pressure sensor, an Air Flow Meter and probably a starter from a turbo( or automatic). Also, before I had the money to pick up the Turbo LSD and half-shafts I used an automatic driveshaft I got from the local junk yard for $30 to mate my turbo transmission with my non-turbo rear end. The auto driveshaft is slightly shorter but it'll still work.

You will also need to use a downpipe to mate the engine to your stock exhaust. I would recommend changing the entire exhaust if you can afford it since it frees up a huge amount of power on these engines.

VacavilleFC said that Jspecs need to be rebuilt, but I've had pretty good experiences with just installing them. I did and it worked out ok for me, I also insalled Jspec's into two of my buddies FD's and it's working out for them so far as well. Luckily for me the place that I get my engines compression tests them in front of me before I pay . Oh and I got my Jspec for $1100 shipped. Look around, there are good deals to be had.
