Trying to get the flywheel nut off? Heres a tip.

I have the engine out of my TII for a rebuild and went to take the flywheel nut off last night. Had a 2.5 foot breaker bar...no impact gun. If this is all you have, heres how to make your life alot easier. The challenge became trying to make the flywheel not move. A screwdriver jammed in the teeth of the flywheel and propped on the ground works for a little while, but 300 ft/lbs of torque will quickly convince the screwdriver to go flying. The other problem with this was that the engine wanted to move off the small makeshift stand I had it on (it was resting on some 2x4's on a concrete driveway). So I took a 4 foot long piece of steel bar about 1/4" thick and drilled one hole about an inch from the end. I then marked a spot with a punch exactly 9-3/8" down from the first hole and drilled that one. Then I just took the bar and bolted it to the flywheel where the clutch had bolted in using these 2 holes. When the flywheel tries to turn, the metal bar just hits the ground and stops it. The length of it provided enough leverage so that the engine didnt move a bit when I used the breaker bar. In about 5 seconds the nut was off with no trouble. Give it a try if you're stuck on getting the flywheel off.

This is similar to what I used on all my engines so far...

But I used a 4meter length of C-section steel that I had lying around for a ´stopper´. And a 4meter long old netball/basketball pole (one of the ones you dig into the ground) as a breaker bar.

Worked excellent after I found a suitable wheel brace.

Wow why didn't I think of that. Would have been great to do when I tried to yank mine off.

sometimes it also helps to tighten the flywheel nut a tad. sometimes trying to loosen it doesn't work. if so, tighten real fast (not actually "tighten," but go clockwise real fast), then try to loosen it again. sometimes that breaks it loose. did that on mine with the impact gun (okay, BDC did, but i watched).

You guys really need to go mess with an impact gun.
Stoppers are not necessary.

The Mazdatrix tool kinda works, but using as much leverage as a giant cheater bar gives, the engine just wants to roll over. The flywheel doesn't move relative to the engine, but now your engine is all over the place. Damn our cylindrical engines!

Thats where the 4mtr long C section I had came in handy...

Stopping the flywheel from turning is easy...

something even cheaper, get a friend with a truck, load your engine into the bed and trot down to a midas, sears, juffy lube, anywhere that uses air tools... pay a kid who works there 5 bucks and say "zap this nut off with your impact gun real quick would ya?" and BAM! you're done...

or if you live anywhere north of Sac you can come by my house and i can zap it off for you and i won't even charge the $5.

btw, i tried using the long bar method, the bar wound up twisted like a pretzel but i did manage to get the nut off before it was a complete mangled piece of metal but i am also lucky to still have my toes.

i would suggest anyone that has an air compressor first should buy an air impact gun before any type of locking devices, it will be of much more use in the future than just the single purpose, for instance taking off the front e-shaft nut while the engine is in the vehicle it would definitely be worth having, there is some other ways without it but it is a headache saver.

Electric impact wrench - literally took longer to unpack it than to
spin the nut off. No flywheel stopper needed.

You can make this yourself from two peice of metal that you have laying around. Just bend it at like 90 degree angle and drill ahole in it and bolt it to the motor. Bolt one to each side and take that cluth nut right off.

Try 54mm...28mm is a little over an inch!
Does it look like about an inch?

think I remember hearing about someone just using a cheater bar and a cheater jack

worked wonders for him and since the jack gives hella leverage he had that off without too much stress

lol you guys really need to get an impact gun the 2 motors i took apart just one good build up of pressure in the tank and some Wd-40 will spin that nut right off without a problem i had more of a trouble trying to take the front gears off than anything else...
TwEaK

P.S especially after motors been sitting outside for about 3 years =P

Mazda makes a tool for this. Its actually kinda funny. It's a gigantic 54mm(?) wrench and another bar that slides onto the flywheel 'prongs'

I actually have 4 impacts, but they were at the other garage 30 minutes away. The method I used only took about 10 minutes max with the drilling time for the steel bar.
