WA Transmission trouble. 86 GXL with 120k miles.

so my 86 GXL started having issues the other day while putting it into gear. I'm not new to cars.. so i want some opions on my thoughts..

sounds like throw out bearing might be going out to me. BUT it makes a rattling/metal bouncing around noise when the clutch is pushed in. as far as i can tell the clutch master/slave cyl's are working fine and not low or leaking. the thing that threw me off is besides the bad sounding throw out bearing, it started making the rattling metal on metal noise and would NOT go into gear, almost as if the clutch master cyl went out.. but i had plenty of pedal.

My thoughts are this.. if the throw out bearing got bad enough, could it cause it to not go into gear? unless i turn the car off? could something else be the cause of this? i'm trying to gather opinions before i buy a pointless new clutch kit when i really need a tranny...

i should also note that its only done this once, i had to start it in reverse.. (hated doing that) and then shut it off, and start it in first... then it started working again. making a slight boucing around/metal rattling noise...

im sort of stumped.. please ask any questions and i'll respond with clairification..

thanks

HEY! someone with the same rattlesnake noise i got! lol ive had my noise for about a year now. me n my girlfriend like to joke around and call it the rattlesnake since my car is the now light brown color... ive been told that it is the throw out bearing that needed to be replaced. i havent replace mines yet n i havent run into any problems with the gears or anything. just the annoying rattle. if you happen to change your throw out bearing before i do plz pm me n let me kno if the issue is resolved and if i fix mines i will do the same.

i posted this question a year ago n never got any responses to it... so goodluck to u my friend

Throw out Bearing is going.
also if you are having a hard time putting it in gear,Then I am gonna bet that the PILOT bearing is going too.
So,all in all,Time to Change the clutch,Flush the Hydraulics,change the bearings,Trans Front Seal,Rear engine seal.refill with Synthetic..and Have a Good Bottle of Whiskey!(optional..but Recommended!).

ohhhhhhh pilot bearing.. totally forgot about that dang thing... i did think it over and it could be a posibility that my clutch system itself, as in the Disk and preasure plate could be wearing out. the disk has those load springs on it, if one of those broke.. could cause the rattling and lock up my clutch.. making it hard to go into gear. although.. pilot bearing sounds less damaging so i'll hope for that... im going to order up a new clutch kit and bleed out my hydrolics and let ya know!

thanks

NO problem. When the pilot bearing starts to go,what happens is: instread of acting like a Guide to prevent the Trans shaft from Flopping about,it Starts to sieze the Input shaft of the Trans to the back of the engine. That will prevent the Trans from spinning freely in Neutral or when the clutch is pressed in.It acts like it is in Gear,so it doesn't allow the Trans to GET a gear.
(sort of like Direct Drive from engine to Rear..if you get my drift).
The Throw out bearing allows you to Push on the Pressure plate and keep the Tranny spinning and the engine revs going, while you shift. If the Throw out goes,It May still allow you to Shift, but it is gonna create a hell of a lot of Racket(rattle snake, someone said).
So,Best thing I can suggest to you is to Look at some Online Tips to help you change out the Clutch.
If you like PM me,I may have a Site or two that will help you.

I should have no problem changing the clutch out. Could the pilot bearing actually seize completely? could it cause damage to my flywheel and or other stuff if it does? I've changed plenty of clutches in hondas... however they don't have a pilot bearing. at least not the older ones.. 93 and older. Just helped a friend with a twin turbo swap in a 300ZX which is what got me thinking.. how would the throw out bearing keep it from shifting into gear? wtf? much appreciated info misterstyx.

The pilot bearing is a needle type bearing,so if the Bearing gets dry,or the Input shaft moves it destroys the race and the Shaft will stick. The result is the Tranny and engine's E shaft spinning Together.
Look up PILOT BEARING(search).also find an Online Service Manual, and SEE where the pilot bearing is.
That is part of the "fun' about these cars. You learn something new every Day!
