Transmission Ordeal
ok, I have a 91 vert. and the other day i was running down the road and when i came home i let it sit all night and when i came back out that morning it was hesitant to go into reverse... it went in like a min later because i was messing with is i just thought nothing of it... later that night i was driving and it started slipping... it's an automatic.. but only between 1st and 2nd... all the other gears are fine... they shift fast and smooth it was pretty low on fluid and we thought that was the problem... we put more fluid in it and it helped the problem a little bit but, it didnt fix it... It still sounds like it is slipping a great deal...1st gear revs all the way up with all the torque and then 2nd just kinda revs around and when it goes into 3rd or 4th it just wants to go like 1st did... i dont know what's up someone said it could be the "bands" or something in the tranny but, i can't figure it out someone please help me i am totally confused on this and has anyone had any problems related and how did you fix it... i dont want to end up spending a lot of money.. if so, it's gettin sold...saddly.. dont have the money right now... but, i need help someone please help !!!

Automatics YUK!! I seen this problem, 3 tranies later come to find out the poor guy had a bad tranny cooler, allowing the tranny to over heat. Sorry to tell, but once it starts to slip, death is soon. Check your cooler, change fluids and try what 90 White GTU suggest. GOOD LUCK!

yeah, if i downshift... it will slow the car down but, it wolnt speed the car up till high in the powerband..but, what all is there to a 5 speed swap... i mean what all will i need and is there places to mount it ?... I want the swap but, i'm not really sure how exactly to do it i'll just get one of my friends to do it if i do... but, yeah i guess it would be more fun and less to worry about when it messes up... just pop, swap, and ride.. haha well, i'm going to go try to find 1) a new tranny 2) a 5 speed tranny 3) some food 4) something to do tomorrow... thanks, i'll keep ya posted...
p.s. anyone selling a whole car? i think it may be cheaper than the tranny it's self... plus, i could use the parts... (:

Well your best bet it to get a parts car. All you need is the pedals, drive shaft, clutch master/slave, and the tranny with the 5 speed trans brace, and little other bolts. And I would deff do it. I had my auto.....SUCKS!!!. Now manual Just one Q for you....does your car accelerate at like 2 miles an hour until you hit about 20 mph then move fast? lol
Hated that ****!
Good luck man

Swap it! I have an automatic in my Probe and I hate it. I was having the same transmission problems as you...didn't want to go into reverse, I could have it down in 1 or 2 and it would still shift itself...
I went to an auto parts store and picked up a $10 bottle of some transmission fluid additive called Kool-Tow. Put a little of that in there...problem solved. It's great stuff and will definitely buy you some extra time. I don't have the money for anything right now either, much as I'd love to just swap it out for a 5-speed.
Give it (or something similar) a try and I'm sure it will help you out.
