Question transmission help

please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but i know very little about transmissions and even less on how to fix them. anyway my problem is that my transmission rakes going into 3rd at high rpms[over 4or so], going into 5th [only 4-5 shift i can take it back out and in anytime] and downshifting from 4th to 3rd if i dont match it exactlly before i put it into third!?

what i wanna know is could a new clutch slove this?? i dont have much hope for a yes to that question since a friend of mine told me thats the sound of "dead synchros and you loosing wads of cash"

figured as much.....he also told me aboutn a thousand to get it fixed?? does that sounds about right too??

if im getting my tranny ripped out and worked on i wanted to have a new clutch put on too, but if its gonna be over a grand i might have to wait a while. i found a guy on ebay selling a tranny w/ 63K miles. would it be worth my time to get it and drop it in instead??

A used tranny can be OK or have problems also - It's not a bad gamble.
I'm running a used one myself.

But - have you tried changing to synthetic gear oil yet?
It won't hurt. It should help a lot. It will buy you some time.

Had mine rebuilt twice since I've owned the car new. '89TII. The first time with 90,000 miles- dealer did it under extended warranty. Total bill $1150. The second time KD did the rebuild when replacing engine. I believe syncros and some bearings. The receipt's at home, but @ $600. It wasn't too bad, just some occasional grinding, but I wanted it right. The syncros just go in these trans. I've used redline since new. A used trans is a thought, but don't forget these cars are 12/17 years old. Might be buying some problems. Best to pull yourself and take it to have it repaired, then do the clutch job yourself. If not, big $$$$$.

ill try the synthetic gear oil too since im going to check it today. but a friend of mine also told me to follow the clutch cable to where it goes into the tranny and there will be a "dial" and that i should adjust it "to the max" he said it fixed is grinding problem on his VW jetta.

you guys think that will change anything...buying some time is what im all about since i really just cant be spending 1000 plus dollars right now.

Why would your friend think that a VW (front wheel drive) tranny/clutch was anything like ours? It's not. Our clutches are hydraulically operated!
So there is really no adjustment as such.
