TX !!Transmission Fiasco!!

I was going down the check list for the 60k tune up when I came across the driving portion. I took her for a spin and I stopped at the corner. As I made a left turn and was engaging to go to 2nd gear when this LOUD noise came about. It sounded as if my Transmission fell out and crashed. And the Shifter came loose and I was unable to put into any gear. She still starts but as far as moving goes it is a no. When i push her she Clunks back and forth like underneath the car. I can roll her but like I said I can't move the shifter in gear at all. It roams free everywhere. I have no idea what it could be I but I have a few ideas but I just want to hear what everyone else thinks

Ha! I know!

I have seen this twice before!

THe transmission shifter linkage is bolted to the back of the tailshaft. THe shifter sits in (on) this linkage. There are 4 or 6 bolts that holds the linkage to the transmission. This linkage is a casting and it breaks. When it breaks, the shifter is free to roam wherever it wants to go.

Both times I have experienced this, the driveshaft broke and "hit" the shifter linkage. THis could also explain the "clunk" you hear.

Get under the car and have somebody move the shifter around. You will see what I am talking about.

P.S. Both times I saw this it was because somebody was trying to do a burnout!

EDIT: I just read your other post! Most likely it was a bad front U-joint that let go! It then let the end of the driveshaft "whip" into the transmission. Most likely you need to source a tranny and a driveshaft. Might as well replace the clutch while you are in there!

I was just thinking to myself before I got in DO NOT DRIVE EVA TODAY. I should have listened to my gut feeling but oh well this was a good learning experience. I plan on doing a T2 conversion anyways this is just gonna speed up the process. If I am gonna get a driveshaft and tranny and clutch I might as well do the conversion now then. Thanks guys I really appreciate the help. It is people like you that keep me coming back to the forum and make me want to finish my project.

Last time that type of tranny problem happened to me (let the clutch out, here a sickening noise and the car goes nowhere) my tranny was totally shot.

It really doubt it is anything major. probably needs a new drive shaft at the most. I won't really know till I get a jack to lift her and see.

Here's a shot of it top from inside the car looking down into the gearshift.
<a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i38.tinypic.com/2n09355.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"></a>

Here's a shot from the under body, of the drive shaft linkage where the U-Joint used to be, And a shot of the snapped shift control case.

Hers another shot from the under body of the drive shaft.

I will put up more pictures my dad said I might have missed something so I will post some more later on. Based on these pics what do you guys think is broken? And can it be fixed with out getting a new transmission?

Just get the linkage off of somebody and a driveshaft! You should be good to go! Replace the clutch while you are in there!

I am glad that is the only thing that happened! If you were going fast, it could have been BADDD!

What kind of clutch should I put in there? I really don't want to do any upgrades until it is a Fully functionally T2. Yea I was going like 5-10 miles an hour when it happened

Good job.

A worn u-joint usually makes alot of noise either during acceleration or engine braking. Did you hear anything?

My front u joint has the slightest amount of play in it. What should i do about this? I just replaced the clutch and im getting ready to reassemble it but want to go to T2 from the flywheel back and eventually T2 all the way in my vert.

PS Sorry for the thread jacking

just get a T2 differential, shaft, and tranny(With the starter and other electrical equipment). A u-joint with play in it is like asking for trouble. Ok for driving when done carefully but one wrong hard launch and you could be screwed.
