Transmission or Clutch??

Ok guys, so I was pulling into a driveway yesterday and when I downshifted into first to get up the little ramp I let the clutch out and put the accelerator down just like everyone does every single day of their life and it just died. So wtf, I started it back up and let the clutch out in first and it just died, no jerky stall or anything it just died.

After that I started the car put it in NEUTRAL let the clutch out so it could idle for a bit but when I let the clutch out it jerked like it stalled but instead of going foward it jerked backwards like it stalled in reverse!

I tried to hold the clutch down and go through all the gears really quick it went into first and second but when I got to third it was blocked or locked out, so it wont go into third, fourth, fifth or reverse.

The car is a 1991 N/A and i've never had this problem before. I got the transmission rebuild a little less than 10,000 miles ago and mazdatrix I think just did some work on my clutch and flywheel 3500 miles ago.

Ok guys thats my problem and I have no idea whether its the clutch of the tranny, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If the car doesn't die with the clutch in, then I'd gather that its the tranny. Especially if you can't get it into gears. Call the rebuilders and give em hell.

Calling the rebuilders isnt going to do me any good. I'm going to waste time talking to a bunch of guys about a transmission that they built for me 2 years ago that doesnt have any warranty or anything like that. On top of that, what would I say..." Hey guys, i'm just calling to tell you that your transmission you built for me sucks so I'm going to sit here and waste time complaining about it rather than fixing it!"

Great suggestions guys but I'm going to take off the tranny and clutch and I guess find my own solution.

Well, the bottome line is you most likely need to rebuild/repair/replace the transmission. If it gets into any other gear just fine, then it is most likely not a hydraulic issue. If it runs with the clutch in, then the clutch is probably ok. It sounds like the problem is in the transmission; maybe a linkage issue like above, I dunno crap about the insides of a tranny. From my limited knowledge, I know it can be complicated. You may want to consider getting another rebuild, as the first time you do it may not turn out so well; but, practice makes perfect. No need to get upset at people pointing out the obvious.

you said the trans has under 10k on it and I didnt see that it was done about 2years ago. But IIRC there was a thread on hear about the trans not wanting to go into gears and the car wuold die....but yeah im thinking that the problem is in the trans.

Try this: put the car in neutral with the engine OFF. Release the ebrake and let it roll forward or backward a bit. If it stops, it's jammed in a gear internally. If it keeps going, then it's not. But from what you described, it's sounds like the 1st/2nd shift fork is not disengaging. You'd have 1st & 2nd available, but no neutral or any other gears. Something else would have to be involved to keep you from getting moving in those gears though. What exactly, I'm not sure. Too bad there's no panel on the bottom of an NA trans, or you could pull that off and take a look.
