Transmission Bushing?

So why my car is graged up for the winter I decided to pull my transmission

(1987 Turbo II, 69,000 mi)

I had a grinding noise drom the trans when engine was running in neutral at a stop. If i pressed the clutch pedal the noise would go away. So im guessing input shaft bearing.

I also had a very sloppy shifter so i ordered the shifter bushings as well.

here is what I found....

im assuming those are the shifter bushings that i cant find?

i pulled the bell housing off the trans and it looks like with the tools at the shop i should be able to pop the front input shaft bearing off. the shaft has some wiggle at the front bearing but the bearing itself does not look destroyed like i thought it should be. its just a light noise it makes at idle that you cant hear with the radio on.

ill know more next week when i have it at work taking it apart. We are getting 8 in of snow right now so im stuck in the house.

could be the input shaft bearing, could also be the throwout bearing for the clutch. yes all that crap in the shifter is from the old bushing. your left to center return spring is also broken and i would replace that while you have the transmission out.

Thanks Karack, i already had the bushings and return spring ordered. i replaced the throwout bearing a few months ago with the new motor, but i dont remember it making that nose when i purchased it. It did only run on one rotor though.

well check the TO bearing for any roughness, replace it with the original or new if in question.

these trannies do tend to whine once much over 100k miles, it's just due to normal wear and tear on the gearsets. i don't even give guarantees that they will operate quietly after a rebuild. but yours isn't there yet so i'd be leaning more on the throwout bearing or sagging tranny mounts/worn out center tranny mount. does the noise go away in 4th gear? go way when applying the clutch just slightly? inspect the crossmember mounts also.

What does it mean if the noise goes away in 4th gear? I have this noise in neutral and if I am in 1 - 3. In those gears it gets very loud on decel. In 4th or 5th the noise is not present. The two rubbers blocks are nearly completely broken so I know I need to replace them. Was wondering if there was anything else specifically associated when you asked the OP about 4th gear.
