Tranny problems!

1988 non-turbo. I got a few problems....first off the shift rod gets hot and I donno im not low on gear oil. Could it be my exaust cause my car has full exaust. second, my shifter moves around way too much like maybe my return springs r broken or a bushing is out? And last thing is Im grinding gears and I donno if its my clutch or syncros or what? Any info helps thanks

Hi pyromanian9912, your shift rod getting hot I would think would be more of an internal gearbox issue since you dont have linkage running outside by hot exhaust, but it could be a possibility if your exhaust is really close to your trans without any heat shields. Dont really know about your shifter moving around but Ive read that the return spring likes to break in 1st gens which is what I have. Grinding everygear or just certain shifts? It could be synchros but if its everygear check your fluid maybe, if low could cause issues, if its only certain shifts that seem to do it id lean more towards a synchro like 1 to 2 shift clean and 3 to 4 always grind id say you need a 3-4 synchro. Hope this helps some

your shifter is probably getting hot because of the exhaust. this in especially true if you are missing the heat shields or of your shifter boots are in really bad shape.

the slop you feel is most likely due to deteriorated shift bushings. the return spring is probably broken too though, so you might wanna replace that too if you are gunna tear into it.

and what aragami said about the grinding.

I checked, the gear oil and im good there and I dont have heat sheilds where my exaust and tranny sit next to eachother. I have a first gen and it had broken return springs thats why i asked but it feels worse than that. Also it grinds second almost everytime I shift even if I powershift and third gear is 99% of the time when I downshift but fourth and fifth r good no problems ever first sometimes doesnt like to go in unless im stopped or going like 2 mph and I know it should be able to fall in around 8-10 mph so it seems more like syncros to me but my clutch is really short and I really gotta push it in good to start my car but id figure a bad clutch would grind every gear. So I was thinking maybe id just replace my clutch and transmission just to be sure nothing is wrong.....but then again I wouldnt know forsure what I was getting if I got a used transmission and could end up with the same problem so what would be cheaper and in my best intrest? New tranny? Or take my tranny to a repair shop? cause last transmission I took apart myself didnt wanna shift after I put it back together so I dont wanns mess with it myself either way I'll replace my clutch though...whats that cost $100?

When you say you checked the gearbox do you mean the fluid in it? Check you clutch fluid resevoir, should be right by the brake fluid resevoir, if its to low you wont have enough fluid to fully engage the clutch, pedle will also be low. You can check your clutch by puting it in 1st with the clutch in and without giving it any gas slowly let the clutch out while still holding the brake down, if it doesnt die you might need a clutch. Without a trans being in the car all you can check is if the shifter shifts freely, and input shaft play.
And new/used tranny or rebuild yours depends, would be cheaper if you dont have any hard part issues besides synchros, if you have other problems inside the price can very quickly double, me being kinda on the cheap side id cover all the bases b4 you go jumping into the trans. And I lived with bad synchros for about 4 years, just get good with your heel and toe and double clutch it like the old dog gear trannys. About a new clutch, dont cheap out unless you like pulling your tranny, and do the whole shebang, clutch ,pp, t.bearing, p.bearing also as cheap as they are unless youve already replaced them, get a new clutch master and slave and line, you might even want to take you flywheel to get resurfaced or just get a new one. Probably not what you wanna hear but this will cover the whole clutch system any problem after that will be inside the trans.

you have no heat shields, and you have deteriorated bushing and boots

Put new shifter bushings and boots in, this will eliminate alot of the slop and allow you to shift gears easier without grinding.

The heat- you have to get shields because the heat will deteriorate your new boots quicker

even if your trans still ends up being no good you will need the boots and bushings for a replacement transmission

my fluids r all good and my car will die if I let out the clutch in first with the brake on and im thinking its my syncros r bad r bad bushings so im wondering what the price in a new tranny would or how much it would cost to have mine rebuilt? And now every time I start my car it smokes but just on the start up and it sometimes takes a minute of turning it over to start like its flooded but it smokes like its oil not gas.....a friend of mine said it could be bad compression or leaking injectors?
