Tranny problem, Help!!!!!
ok so i went down to the local auto zone to get a part for my dads truck, and everything was working normally, then as i was leaving i backed out and when i tried to put it in first it felt like the tranny was locked up, as in i was letting out the clutch pedal and the car wasnt going anywhere, but there was resistance on the motor. After that i put the shifter in the nuetral position and the tranny was in reverse! So now i can only put the shifter in the first and second gear position, but with the effects i described above, and neutral position, but its actually in reverse. Ther previous owner put a short throw shift in, if that has any relivance...
any suggestions?

It is worn shifting forks-I think. I had the same problem and replaced the transmission and clutch while I was in there. Solved the problem.
I dropped the old transmission about a foot when I was moving it and it loosened up the shift forks then.

The transmission I am using now was shipped to me stuck in TWO gears. It was in reverse and 2nd, and the result was the shifter would barely move & the input/output shafts would only turn a little bit then stop. You may have a similar problem.
Drop the transmission, and pull the tail housing off. Once it is off, you'll see 3 shift rods that each have an arm on the end (than manual calls them "rod ends"). The control lever that is connected to the shifter has an arm on the end of it, as well, that moves underneath these 3 shift rod arms. The movement of the shfter and control arm pops the 3 rods forward or backward & into gear. 2nd, 4th & Reverse are forward, and 1st, 3rd & 5th are backwards (movement is opposite of shifter movement). Check that all of the rods are in the center position, or only one is forward or backwards. You can push/pull the rods to shift the transmission by hand.

i had similar issue except on mine it seem to be stuck on reverse, i took the tranny down and pop it out with a tiny crew driver... i read on this forum that you dont have to take the tranny down but it's so hard to get in the the hole without taking it down.

Prying the 5th/reverse rod back in place with a screwdriver through the 5th gear/reverse switch hole is covered in this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/help-quick-89-gtu-stuck-reverse-498913/. I hear it's a pain, but it's possible to do with the transmission left in place. The switch is item #11 on the first picture above.
