is it the tranny, clutch, drive shaft or Diff?

Hey all,

thought id post my issues on this part of the site to get some pro. help on diagnosing my issue.

My got a NA S4 base model, yesterday i was on my way home stopped at a light, it turns green so i popped it into 1st and gave it a lil go. next thing i know the i hear a big pop and a crash as if metal was falling apart. i try to pop it into other gears goes in smoothly no problem. give it a lil gas and it wouldn't move. rpm and speedometer both start to do their thing but im still not moving.

fortunatly i was 1 block from my house so i get out and push. as i was pushing i can hear the sound of crackling metal comming from some where under the middle part of the car. tranny area to be exact just under and behind the shifter.

i guess what im trying to figure out is what do i need to do in order to isolate the problem.

any pointers would be great.

thanks

Bunta

You don't need "pointers", you need to get the car in the air, get underneath and see what's what.

Are you sure you saw the speedometer increasing in speed although the car was not moving.

The speedo cable is connected to the output shaft of the tranny. I would guess, something after that---my guess would be the diff, but as mentioned above, you'll have to get elevation and check it out.

I had a similar experience in an Integra I used to drive, and it was right after I put a new stage 2 clutch put in. Anyways, I hitting a corner and into second gear i heard a terrifying sound, like metal being thrown all over. I didnt have an LSD tranny on that car, and your diff isnt either. So if you axle that recieves power broke, your speedo would work, and your car would not. hehe, at least that what happen to me. Anyways, while i have not blown a diff my self (yet) I have been told when you do, its not a question of whats wrong, you feel it, the car will bounce a bit when it happens, violently, it least thats what I have been told. But I agree with Clokker, get that baby up and find out.

When you push it does it grab every so often? When i blew my diff it sounds the same as what you described. I was experiencing wheel hop when it happened though. My assumption would be the rear or driveshaft being the speedometer works so the trans shouldnt be bad. Also when i blew my diff it sounded like it was coming from the center of the car but it was just the noise coming through the driveshaft into the car.

Or jack the rear end up and put it in gear and see what doesn't move. If the drive shaft moves, then your diff. If the driveshaft doesn't move then your clutch/transmission. End of story, get under there and check it out besides all these guesses.

Step 1- Buy a jack (because you dont have one already?)

Step 2- Jack stands would help as well (lets be safe.)

Step 3- Get car in air, and investigate.

Step 4- Close a BS thread.

^^ What, rewrite your comment/statement.

If you can shift without the clutch, that means your clutch took a ****. Even with the drive shaft broken, you should not be able to get into gear without pressing the clutch pedal (with the car running)

Next time take a chance to look at whats going on befor you freak out. Inspect THEN diagnose. You will be amazed at what you can find by just looking around the car for possible issues.

Well,
Here's a place to start a search

http://www.car-part.com/

I'd start there, then figure you'll most likely need to replace the u-joints too

They can be had from Rockford Driveline---do a search on the forum, someone already posted the part numbers

I did mine a couple of weeks ago----getting mine back up and running from a 3 year hiatus.

If all else fails, you could also buy new from RB or possibly Mazda Trix or one of the other vendors

GOOD LUCK!!!

Even with the car on, with the car off the ground, or no driveshaft hooked up, it should slide right in if the syncros are doing their jobs. Not necessarily good on it though.
