TONS of heat from around the shifter
I just got done with a motor/tranny swap in my 87 N/A. It runs cool and idles great, only problem is, after being on the road for about 5 mins or more, a REALLY HOT wind starts coming up through the shifter boot. It makes the shift **** hot and the shifter bar searing hot.
Any ideas?

Yep I believe its those doughnut shift boots. I changed my bushings and in the process broke my old one up so bad that now the shift lever is hot as a bitch. Im gonna get a new one as soon as I can.

We changd out my shift lever bushings during the winter and found that the lower boot was virtually gone. I still haven't replaced it, believing that it wasn't critical.

k well if theres air coming up through it then theres a hole in something and one of more of the booties is probably hashed (maybe all three of the big pieces and some of the smaller ones). you should probably replace some or all of them depending on their condition and thatll fix it. its quite a common problem with rx's. you probably smell tranny fluid too right?
o and youre right, the boots arent critical. just that when theyre hashed that nice hot air from under the car comes in the car

Are your cat's clogged?
Love that avatar, bingoboy. Now you just need a less-gay handle...

You people are wusses. Not only is my shifter rod searing hot, but I've been driving around with the heater on for the past month.
The problem is most likely due to one of the following:
1. Missing rubber shift boot and/or insulation (there is a fabric insulation that is supposed to be underneath the trim and shift boot)
2. Missing exhaust heat shields (very common)
3. Clogged cat.

Okay, maybe so (and that is a very nice thing for you to do...) but I just thought it odd that this topic was talked about last week and the EXACT question was answered in that thread.... thats all...

Ok I really don't know anything about this but did you put a Magnaflow cat on?
Just wondering because when I was looking for a cheap high flow cat I was told that it's very possible something like a magnaflow that isn't made for rotaries would be toast in no time.
