tokico Vs Kyb, best for the money
im trying to find out if kybs or tokicos will be the best setup for the money,
as it sits, ive got allot of wieght reduction,
adjustable coilovers,
plan on getting front camber plates.
im wondering if i should go for the cheaper kyb's (agx)
or dish out the the extra $$coin$$ for tokico's (illumina)
i was quoted 750 with a discount through my work for the tokicos, (canadian) and its near where i live so shipping would be zero (me picking it up)
(i dont wanna get ripped off or anything)
would i be better of to get tokicos or agx of ebay for about 450 (less for the kyb)american and ship it
thanks for your help i look forward to having a car that doesnt roll like a truck through the corners

whatever you do, dont get AGX's and then use them on lowering springs. AGX's are warranted, but not if they are used w/ aftermarket springs. i had to fight them to get my front struts replaced under warranty for my AWD DSM that had Intrax springs. they told me to ship the struts to them, they will take them apart and decide if it was their fault or mine and whether or not they want to replace them. im not spending $20 to ship them **** that probably wont get replaced...
if you have the means, i highly suggest Koni Yellows. they blow away both KYB and Tokicos.

I remember seeing RETed post a while ago that he'd seen shock dyno's of the Illuminas and the AGX's and said that the AGX's had a much greater range of adjustability, that combined with a much cheaper price makes them a very attractive looking shock.

I dunno..... for the price I paid for my AGX's.. . I love the **** out of those shocks!!! the Tokikos were like 200 bucks more for the set...
And.. . as for lowering springs... Eibachs or Racing beats aint gonna cause any problems with the shocks... INTRAX with the 1.5 inch drop.... that may

thats true. eibachs and maybe the RB's have pretty mild drops to them. the Intrax springs used were 1.6 rear and 1.5 front... thats pretty damn aggressive. especially for DSM's, which have **** for suspension travel anyways.
do the AGX's for the FC's still have that stupid plastic insert in the strut top that you adjust w/ a little screwdriver? if so, i would stay away from them for that point alone. the plastic inserts ALWAYS stripped or twisted and would be stuck on one setting...for life.

Tokico's are like that.
Koni yellows are like that.
The KYB rears are adjusted from the bottom via a **** on the side of the strut body.
About the only things that are not like that are really expensive coilover kits or full-racing dampers...

Uh, how bout with a **** that doesnt have detents for settings. its infinitly variable on the Koni Yellows, up to 1.5 turns IIRC. the AGX's are only 4 detents and 1 full rotation at max. the koni yellows have more adjustability and the broader range.
let me ask you this; is there a good reason for the snide remarks? or are you just being a jerk?

I'm wondering if most drivers would be able to tell the difference between infinitely adjustable or not. I'm guessing not. Only when you've got a ton of experience and a finely tuned (handling) car would you appreciate the difference -- and my guess at that point is you're probably not looking at these types of dampers anyway?
just my thought -- I have no experience with any of the above mentioned brands, but based on my own research, AGX did offer reasonable performance for the price -- beyond that, it's only a small increase in price to go full coilover w/ Tein. (assuming you're buying damper and springs at the same time).

well, regardless of a novice driver's ability to discern between fine damper adjustments, the Koni would still have 6 "Settings" if you retained the 90* turn = 1 step considering that the Konis have 1.5 rotations of adjustment from soft to firm. that right there gives you more choices than the AGX where you have Soft, Softer, softest and wtf.
due to the bad experiences ive had with AGX's in the past, i cant bring myself to recommend them to anyone else, unless they are simply looking for rear adjustables. the AGX rear adjustables are nice with their 8 detent adjustment settings, easily changed via the **** on the lower body. AGX's get props for that.

I have kyb agx on my car with ebaich pro kit springs. Love em to death. I think the kyb warranty covers all lowering springs up to 1" ..anything else voids it. The agx are awesome though. Not the best for daily driving...but then again why else would you buy aftermarket struts? They are pretty damn firm on 1 (softest setting) and when I kick it up to 6-8 in front and 12-16 in back...rock solid. Great for the track. Never really looked into tokico, but I wouldn't waste my money...for a bit more money you could get the tein fully adjustable coilovers....everything is "a bit more" so I didn't get caught up in the "oh these might be a little better so I'll dish out $xxx more for them. Go with the KYB AGX, you won't be dissapointed...unless you already have springs that are more than 1" drop..

BTW, the Koni yellows are 2.5 turns lock-to-lock.
As Trav already mentioned, unless you're a real good suspension tuner, the infinitely variable adjustment is more of a hinderance than an advantage.
We only go with 90-degree increments, cause that's the smallest resolution we can feel at this moment.
This makes it a 10-way adjustable...
