Tips for removing upper transmission bolts

Hey I've got an S4 n/a that recently blew it's top. I need to get the upper tranny bolts out so I can pull the motor. However there's like **** for room up there, barely enough to get a wrench in (not to mention im weaksauce as hell i had alot of trouble getting the lower ones off). Should I remove the intake mani first or is there an easier way? Thanks.

i just pulled out my tranny this morning, i found it pretty hard to look at the top bolts, cause i was thinking 'damn this is gonna be a pain in the ***' but it really was pretty damn easy. if you have some dexterity in your fingers it will be simple

well if your gonna pull the engine. make it easier on yourself and pull the tranny with the engine .. it saves alot of time and effort. but if your hell bent on taking just the engine. get either a bunch of long extensions, or just one really long one and a u-joint and a socket .. i find its easier if you come from the back near the output shaft of the tranny . but i would just pull the tranny and the motor. not to mention it makes mating the tranny and the engine back up about 100 x's easier

I agree if your gonna pull the motor just pull it with the tranny. to take the top bolts out you can just use a wrench with bent end. Works really well if you have someone losen the nut while you keep placing the wrench on the bolt till it's loose enough to do by hand, the one on the side with the slave clutch you can use a ratchet with an elbow and long extension from the driver side of the engine bay. Worked pretty good for me both times i pulled and reinstalled the tranny.

I second that.
Back then all I had was a tranny jack, even with it, it is a pain to match them up.

But if you really need to seperate them, a multi point 14mm(?) socket, a breaker bar and a short socket extension worked out for me from under the car. The multipoint socket and the socket extension length are key here. I really recommend a tranny jack at the very least, especially when mating the engine and tranny back together.

And removal of the engine without the tranny isn't the hard part.. it's putting it back in.

Best advice I can give for that is put half the mount on the engine (on both) and the other half on the chassis, then all you have to do is slip it onto those lame nub-of-bolts... it can be a major pain lining it up... I have to do it tomorrow morning... but I didn't want to dump out 5 quarts of Red Line tranny fluid that is 2 weeks old. ;P.

Actually its quite easy to get the top trans bolts from under the car given you have an extension bar. And a U-joint too.

The top passenger side bolt goes in front to back. If you can get it broke loose, it has a slot in it for a flat blade screw driver. Stubby screw driver works.

It's still easier to pull engine and tranny together.

I'll second the from the bottom of the car approach. I can get all 3 bolts with an extension and one of those pivot thingies.

I remove the hood and use a normal wrench with a piece of tube as an extension from the top. Makes short work of all the top bolts. Leverage is your friend!

Its alot easier isn't it? You don't necessarily need a u joint but its tons easier. Also if you try and get the bolts off from the top you end up losing all the skin on your knuckles.

Thats why you use a 2ft pipe for an extension
