Timing and CDI (Crane HI6)
I tried to see where the timing was tonight on my car but could not find the marks. It is a new motor and I dont know if I could have put the pully on wrong or if the CDI (Crane HI6) is messing with the timing light. I tried to search this but got a lot of general timing questions any help is appreciated.
Thanks

I watched the smog tester have trouble checking the timing on my car (MSD CDI). The CDI box makes multiple sparks below 3000rpm. I would assume you are trying to check the timing on the #1 rotar leading spark plug wire and have the CDI box only hooked the the leading coil. I think you can check the timing from the #1 rotar trailing spark plug wire. Do a search to see if I am correct on that, I am preety sure you can check you timing that way too.

Hey thanks for the quick response. Ya thats what I was doing checking L1 and My Crane HI6 is hooked to the lead coil. I will try your idea tomorrow. Anyone else with any input please chime in. Like I said this sux cuz I dont know if I put the bottom pulley on wrong (I heard you cant) or if that HI6 is giving me grief. Any answers solutions greatly appreciated. Thanks Again 37FC3s.

Then do you think I put the pulley on the wrong way when I got the motor..? It seems to run fine, I just wanted to check and see where its at but no marks show up and just freshend up the marks with fresh red and yellow paint as well. I was thinking it would make sence that the timing light may not read correctly due to the ignition firing multiple times over what the stock ignition would do. Anyway anyone feel free to chime in. Also if I hooked the timing light to T1 would I get the same reading as L1...?

Cmon guys I know someone has to know the answer to this. If nothing else can someone just tell me if it is possible to put the crank pulley on wrong? And will the T1 give the same reading as L1 would...?
Thanks

You have to work at it to put the pulley on wrong. One hole is offset so that all four holes will match only in one pattern. If you wallow out that oddball hole, then you could put the pulley on wrong.
I'd bet a bucket of ten dollar bills that your trying to time the car with the rpms over 1000 rpm instead of under 1,000 rpm and preferably closer to 750rpm. The ECU automatically advances the timing when over apporx 1000-1100 rpm therefore Hiding the timing marks.
The Crane 6 has NOTHING to do with your problem.

T1 should align with the second mark on the pulley. Not the same as the first mark for the Lead wires.

Hey thanks hailers I appreciate it. Well I will take the pulley back off and put it back on. If there is any possible wrong way to do somthing I proabably did it. The CAS was put back in by the builder and he said it should be timed. I just want to see where it was before I start pouring the coals to it now that its broke in. Any other advice by anyone also apprecaited. The idle is set at 750-780 I used the SAFC to adjust the idle.

To re-stab it, with car off turn crank until leading mark on pully lines up to the needle. then, unplug CAS, and remove the 10MM bolt that holds it in place. then carefully remove CAS. on the bottom (the geared part) look for an indented circle, line that up with the line on the CAS. then carefully reinstall the CAS making sure the gear doesn't turn and that circle stays lined up. bolt her up, plug her in, then rock'n roll!!! Not 100 % sure if this is the "perfect" way, but I have done it to all my Rx-7's and it works just fine.

Ok thanks inbrown, I did all that and I keep coming up a bit advanced anyway I think I am advanced. Anyway I am like a 1/2 inch from getting the yellow mark to line up with the needle. I tried restabing severa times as I am so close. I also tried another CAS and same thing. The CAS is turned as far counterclock wise as it can go and I am still like a 1/2" off the mark. I am close but no cigar. So now what..? Anyone ever have this problem before..? Well thanks for all the help I really appreciate it. And Reted you were right the Crane does not affect the L1 timing, as I can now personally verify since I have restabbed the CAS it is so close but no matter how many restabs I have done I still keep coming up short.

Align the pulley mark with the fixed pointer.
Now stare at the url I posted of a cas. Note how the two top teeth are cutting the corner of the black sensor at the front and at the rear black sensor.
Now stab your cas and rotate it til your cas looks like the one in the jpg.
If it won't work the first time, remove the cas and reinstall it one gear tooth to one direction or the other. The gear I'm talking about is the gear at the bottom of the cas.
Wont' work? Try pulling the cas and going a tooth the other way.
Tried multiple times and you can't get on the mark???? Maybe elongate the slot in the cas a touch at whichever end needs to be gutted out for the cas body to turn some more so the marks align. That would be the last chance solution.
That picture is too small. Go to this thread and click on the jpg THUMBNAIL I attached to one of my posts https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hlight=cas+jpg
