TII tranny problem, Grinds 1st wont do 3rd
Hey, I'm trying to help a friend fix a problem hes been having.
His tranny barely goes into first and will not go into 3rd while moving, while stationary, you can select them. Now the odd thing is, this is the third absolutely mint tranny to do this in his car. All tranny's were out last week I took a look inside them all and they looked absolutely great, all the syncros were good, no metal shavings in the oil, seemed to shift fine.
The tranny in the car only has 99,000 kms/61,000 miles on it. The only thing I've noticed is the shifter doesnt have the little bushing around the ball on the end. Other then that it looks exactly the same as it did when it went in the car.
Any Ideas? He slams the gears quite hard, could it have somehow knocked a selector rod out of alignment?
Tranny is S5 too. Fluid level is good. Syncros good. Shifter bushings are good minus the one that goes on the end of the shifter. But it drove fine for several drift events without that plastic bushing so I am lost.

When the car is at idle, push the clutch pedal down and rev the engine and see if it will go in first easily. I'd make certain that there is minimum clutch freeplay to ensure that the plate is being completely disengaged from the disc, and no problems with the hydraulics.

Ok so now it's doing it with the transmission out of the car. I might have a lead though. I took out both the detent ***** for the 1-2 rod and 3-4 rod and the thing shifts fine, obviously will not stay in gear, but will engage the gear again no problem. Put them back in and the problem returns. Is it possible that he slammed the gears hard enough to damage the area in which the ***** rest against? or something of the like?
