TII exaust
hey guys,
I just bought a TII, not more than a week ago, I know only a little about the rotary, but I have been reading a ton, on most things I read, it says that the first mods should be an exaust, and an intake
what's a good brand for exaust? how much? do I need exaust back to the headers (does the rotary have headers??) or just cat back, or what?? please help!
what's a good intake??? does it get air from an aera away from the engine, so it dosn't take in hot air?? thanks
peace-

I've got an 87 TII as well, and i've got the full Racing Beat ( http://www.racingbeat.com ) exhaust on it. If you open up the exhaust, you'll be pushing a couple more psi through, so you might want to buy (or build) a Fuel-Cut Defense (FCD) to aviod running lean and blowing apex seals on the rear rotor. Also, you'll probably want to invest in a boost gauge (autometer, HKS, Greddy) Intake I'm not too sure about, since I'm in need of one as well. But I'm looking at the Mariah ( http://www.mariahmotorsports.com ) intake for mine.
This is all assuming that your engine can still handle more boost and more power. Hope this helps, and welcome to the forum

JeremyII,
Welcome.
The rx-7s have one of the HUGEST followings of any sports car. There are TON of accessories, a TON of performance mods, bodykits, light kits, classic car parts, new OEM parts (try finding that from Ford or Chevy - da bastads'), TONS of websites on upgrades, fixes, performance options, etc... There are local rx7 clubs in your state/region, local car meets, and group "projects."
What makes the rotary engine unique is its light weight & smaller size vs. the amount of HP/torque it puts out. It allows mazda to make the ideal sports car - lightweight, 50/50/50/50 balanced, high RPMs, more room for stiffening & handling upgrades, and even lower riding height & needed length for improved aerodyamics, fast 0-60 times, fast 1/4 mile times, etc...
Besides low weight to output, the rotary engine is DESIGNED to take high revs and makes the ideal racing car & street supercar. The matching transmission and drivetrains are BULLETPROOF and most 450+HP cars use the OEM transmission & drivetrain (take that mustang).
Your lucky in that most rx-7 performance part websites "stage" their upgrades for ez budgeting and understanding.
Stage 1 does include the exhaust system, catalytic converter, perf. air intake, cold air box, fresh air headlight scoop, downpipe (faster turbo spooling and more air volume), ignition system (strong sparks), and most important - gagues to monitor your engine including air/fuel, boost, exhaust temp, and coolant temp.
Stage II is usually FMIC (front mount intercooler), fuel pump upgrades, and other ways to "max out" your stock fuel system setup like fuel cut defenders, etc.. 240 rear wheel HP is about the max you can make on the OEM setup.
Stage III is the extreem mods like higer cc fuel injectors, turbo, ECU upgrades, engine porting, 3rd or 4th set of injectors, etc...
Headers are not really that important until you get to 400+ RWHP. Yes the 2 rotor engine can take 450HP without frame reinforcement and the 3 rotor engine can make 650 or more HP.
Good news on the cold air box & intake. You can make your own or go with one from mariahmotorsports.com. Here's a pic from one I've purchased (but not intstalled).
Note I'd start looking around at all the websites for more ideas and your local rx7 chapter.
Here's just a few of them. Keep looking around the links sections for even more.

Exhaust and Intake should be first but you can't leave it that way....full exhaust and intake will boost you around 11-12psi which is waaaay too much for the stock fuel system when you're using a FCD.

IMPORTANT: Get your wastegate ported first. Real easy, just take the turbo off, and your metal plate covering the waste gate, Take a carbide drill and port it. Then you should work on getting an exaust, down pipe, mid pipe, intake and Fuel Cut Defencer, Fuel pump. This should put your boost at safe levels for driving.

Congrats on a great true sports car! I think its good advice to make sure everything is up to snuff before doing mods! Full tuneup, all fresh fluids, including: gear, tranny, brake, anti freeze ect.ect. Then...If your not familure with a Turbo car, its very important to drive mellow before the engine warms up to normal operating temps....If you have been "on it" alot, then let it cool down before just shutting it off....Your RX-7 Turbo will love you for it and take care of you, with lots of pure fun & excitement!
