TII Engine overheating???

I'm looking into buying this TII, but the thing is the engine gets hot very quick. The guy selling the car said it was a carbon buildup and could be remedied by pouring some auto tranny fluid into the intake manifold and letting it sit in the for a little and it will break down the carbon. he said that's what his mechanic told him to do.

do you guys think it is a carbon buildup? is what he told me a safe way to fix that problem? what are any other possible reasons of the engine heating up like that? and he also said that there was some work done on the turbo about 5000 miles ago, he didn't remember what was done but he said it cost almost $900 at the dealership, he's said he's gonna find out and let me know what that was. but i think i might buy the car unless the overheating problem is gonna be too much too fix. by the way, he's asking 3500 or best offer and it's an 87 with 93000 miles.

I don't know about that. If it is overheating then I wouldn't suggest buying it. It might already have damamge done to it. For the most part when a rotary overheats pretty good the motor is gone. Just what I heard, and since its a turbo it more likely to have something wrong IMO. About the auto trans fluid, I never really heard about putting it in the intake. I just heard to remove the spark plugs and put it in the spark plug hole then letting it set for 24 hrs. Could be wrong with this info but just what I think. I say talk him down on the price or don't buy it!

Have you turned the car on. Does it idle funny. How about boost?

Either way, if it has been over heated, then I agree with kleach.

You can pour the ATF into the intake runner's. That would mean however that you would have to take the upper intake manifold off.

alright, i've been reading some other threads about overheating and the damage done to the engine. i'm not actually sure if the engine has ever overheated, but it does get hotter then it should. i guess the distinction there isn't too clear but i hope someone knows what i mean. he was telling me something like there's too much back pressure because of the buildup so it's causing some of the coolant to be forced out. i'm guessing, if i remember correctly what i read a little while ago that that would mean that one of the water jacket seals is busted. i didn't check if there's bubbles in the coolant reservoir but i'm thinking if it's spilling off because of the buildup then there would have to be bubbles in it.

the car was also idling a little funny, well i'm not that familiar with the idle of a rotary engine, but it the idle after i drove it around a little was kinda lopey, like an aggressive cam piston engine. is that good or bad. i couldn't really drive the car because there weren't any plates so i just drove it up and down this driveway a little, it seemed to be building boost normally.

one thing that worried me today was at first he started it and it sounded strong. and then i guess it was already running hot and he thought the coolant was low so he went to add water in it. and after he did that the car wouldn't start til we did a rolling start. the car just wasn't turning over, it seemed like it could've been the battery but that had me a little worried.

oh and about the whole pouring atf into the intake manifold, i said that wrong, he just told me the basic idea of it so i was just relating what i remembered.

i basically have the price down to 3100 becuase he told me he agreed to sell it to someone else for that price but the other guy just kinda disappeared. i'm starting to think this car isn't a good idea, it's just i've been looking for a TII for a while and this is the only one i've found in my area so i'm still hoping i can work something out with it. Thanks for your help guys.
