Those interested in a Cargo Cover...I have an idea
Alright this is merely a proposition thus far.
The problem:
I do not like having all my valuables flying all around me as I drive, I also don't like them being visible to criminals and other such mean people. My car looks like a junkyard having my books, papers, tools, etc. sprawled out everywhere in the back.
Possible solutions:
A.) Take out all my **** and leave car empty.
Not going to happen as I need most of that stuff.
B.) Buy a used Cargo Cover for 100 bucks that is similar to cardboard with carpet tacked onto it.
I don't want to spend this much on this and have it be so flimsy.
C.) Construct my own makeshift trunk that will resemble the cover, drop in easily, be easily removed if I need to use the spare, will look stock, will not weigh more than 15 lbs. Will securely hold all of my belongings and restrict them from slamming me in the head.
This is my best idea thus far for solving the problem!
Option C is obviously the best answer for me. Now what I am proposing to do is to construct it out of something relatively lightweight either aluminum or a stiff and durable plastic.
I am thinking it will extend to the rear speakers and the front of it, ie. the section closest to the driver will have a removable section or a door to access things from inside the car. From inside I was thinking of mounting it with bungees to the hatch so upon opening the hatch you would open the compartment. Either that or making it independent of the rest of the hatch and have it open with it's own latch and allow it to stay closed when the hatch was opened.
I want this to be as plug and play as possible so you can basically just drop it in and tighten a couple of bolts around the joints of the structure and it will maintain a decent structural integrity.
I was thinking of making it myself including cost of fabric and such and hoping to come out at somewhere around 50$. Is anyone interested in a write-up for this or possibly me just making a couple and selling 'em and shipping out the parts with instructions?
I was also thinking one design could be to have a hinge that was mounted about a foot further and making the top of the design more rigid for a subwoofer enclosure, thus shrinking the trunk capacity about a foot or a foot and a half. This would also be an ideal placement for the sub I am told aiming at the hatch-glass further back from the storage bins.
Anyways if anyone is interested post up or give me some advice on how to construct it. This was a completely random idea I had on my home last night and it is by no means completely thought out.
Have a good one!
