Thinking of starting a drag car project

Well me and a friend might start up on a straight drag car. We both have TIIs as it is, but we can get a TII for $200 with no engine/tranny. I can also get a blown engine for $200 and we both plan on rebuilding it and bridgeporting it ourselves. Probably spend $1000 and have a running TII. What do you guys think, yay or nay? Only problem I see is we both are going to be working on building our cars up at the same time so funds for the drag car will be limited. But I guess it can take a while and wouldn't matter.

"Blown engine" sounds like dead housings to me, and tracking down some good ones is not cheap.

Getting down to the 10's is pretty straight-forward, but I dunno how fast you're looking to run. Getting into the single digits is going to cost a lot of money and a lot of time. The stock IRS just can't take the abuse going that fast - at a certain point you're going to have to convert to solid rear axle; the options are huge, but it's still going to cost you.

Ya I think we'd both be happy dipping just into single digits. With a BP, what turbo would be the cheapest/best to go with?

If we do this we are going to probably split everything we buy/spend down the middle.

About the blown engine...I can probably get some good used housings for around $60 shipped a piece. Part of the fun of this is going to be building our own engine ourselves. I'm sure we'll have plenty of questions I thought I'd never ask if we go ahead with it

If you want to go fast for little money, don't start with an FC. Get something lighter with a live rear axle like a 1st Gen. You'll spend a lot less money getting to where you want.

Well we both have/like FCs so we want to stick with the Fc. I know there are cheaper options. But this is cheap to start and something we both know and like. What turbo do you guys think? Will be using N20 probably too, so that can be used to spool it.

how and why is an fb a better drag project car?
and what is a 'live' axle?

An FB is a helluva lot lighter than an FC, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand why starting a drag project with the lightest possible chassis means you need less power (and hence less $$$) to achieve your target.

A live rear axle is another name for a solid rear end, i.e. not IRS. FC's have semi-trailing arm rear suspension, which causes the rear wheels to lean inwards the further the suspension is compressed (which happens under hard acceleration). A drag car needs to keep both rear tires planted square on the ground during a launch, so a solid axle is much better.

For drag racing, you'd need to spend a lot of money to make FC suspension hook up as well as an FB.

There are good reasons why stock body/chassis FC drag cars are virtually non-existant.

Well it would be a full out drag car. We both already have TIIs for the street.

T66/t70/t51 kia would be all good turbos. 1.32 a/rs on the turbine housings. Going to have to spent thousands on a guru or dogmission tranny, and definatyl have to have a sold rear axel.
