is there a valve to allow the flow of the hoses to the heater core?

i'm having no flow at all...we've tried everything to see if it's clogged but it's not..it just won't flow..and we've replaced the thermostat but still no luck...

so is there a valve or something that im not getting?

Well as a mechanic in training I can tell you that in reguards to a cooling system on a piston engine you might have that problem if your water pump wasn't working. Now if the rotory engine has the same cooling setup I don't know, but if it does then you can check your waterpump function by gently squeezing the upper rad hose and having someone start the car. The hose should swell and push out against your hand. I'm sorry I'm still learning about my RX-7 because my engine is blown and I'm in the process of swapping it out and I haven't had time to play with the engine much yet. I don't know if that'll work on the rotory or not but someone might come along with a better answer then I can give. Peace, Tempest

you might have electric problems with the logican or something. the coolant flow stops when it's on cold. might be stuck on cold.

I think you will find there is a valve on the inlet side of the heater core, This will be connected to the cable that you select hot or cold with on the dash.... It could be siezed or simply not connected.

Disclaimer...I do not own & have not worked on the model you have but in my experience this is the way they all function.

the heater control valve is in the big HVAC unit with the heater core. that valve controls coolant flow into heater core. its electrically operated, no cable.

when you say no flow, what exactly do you mean? does your blower motor work? need a little more info to diagnose

by no flow, i mean that the coolant isn't flowing from the IN to the OUT hoses....i put my hand on the in - out hose and it's cold...but we tried directing flow of coolant from the out to the in and it works..but in - out doens't work...

so the hoses are cold and isn't warming my heat....

LOGICON FAILURE/HEATER ACTUATOR FAILURE.

temp fix:
Stick your head under the dash on the drivers side. You'll see the heater core inlet. There is an actuator there connected to a plunger valve. Remove the actuator arm and open the valve. Wire it open.

perminant fix:
You'll need to determine if the logicon in the dash failed or the actuator that controls the valve is broke. Then replace/repair. Search the archives for "cold solder" and "Logicon"

Here is a link to my mirror site of the FSM.
The 89 manual has a section on the heater.
