People say that there are shops that sell R12.

I have yet to see that in real life practice. Sigh

In the U.S., R12 is still available and can be purchased, but it can no longer be manufactured. It is illegal to manufacture R12. All R12 being sold has been recovered and recycled from HVAC systems. So, depending on where you buy it, its purity might vary. R12 can only be sold to technicians certified under EPA Sections 608 or 609 technician certification programs. The regulations are probably different in Europe.

The dealership converted my 88 GXL to the newer freon that doesn't cool as well.

What would happen if I put R12 back in?
I have a new OEM stock compressor that I will be installing.

As long as your system is flushed out, and the orings and oil are compatible with R12 refrigerate, then everything should be okay.

I just redid the ac in my FD with R12. It cools so much better than 134A.

If you're still running the FC's OEM serpentine condenser, R12 works best. Converting over to "duster gas", aka R152A or HFC-152A, works/cools just as well as R12 with the OEM FC condenser - there are how-to threads on it here. Also if you chuck the OEM condenser and replace it with a new generic parallel flow condenser of the same size & re-plumb your system to suit, you'll find that R134a will work/cool just about as well as R12 did too.

For $300 plus for the dealership to convert from R12 to the newer freon I think they changed all the O-rings. Then they sent me on my way stating my condenser was bad! Oh, we can't get that part for you, it's NLA! Nice, come in with no A/C, pay $300 and leave with no A/C!

Are the new O-rings compatible with R12? Or do they need to be replaced with the R12 O-rings?
My A/C lines are now open to the atmosphere, do I need to flush them out?
Also, my new OEM compressor, what do I need to do with the oil that is in it from the manufacturer?
