okay, as i ask this question, keep in mind that i havent had my 7 for very long, i read so much about different names that people call the different models. for example, n/a, or fc3a, or s4na... what are all the different types of models and what names go with what and what would my car be? i got an 88 gxl. i know that would be na right? but would there be any other names for it?
and today i visited this shop called atkins aviation/rotary. they specialize in rotary engines for cars, boats and planes up here in washington. well, we talked to somebody about cold air intakes for the second gen and he said that he wouldnt really do much except get the k&n drop in. he said we already got the setup for it and just getting the cone is like a waste of time to him. and this guy has been w/rotary and 7's for awhile and he knows his ****. he got 1st gen with a 7" supercharger and a carburator. sweet.... anyways, like i said, he said to just get the drop in.
what do you guys think about that?

Hes probably right.
Easy way to decipher 2nd gens:
FC3S = all 2nd gens (part of the VIN)
S4 = 86-88 models
S5 = 89-91 models
N/A = not Turbocharged
TII = Turbocharged models
Theres alot more info if you want it. Atkins is a nice place, but I think theyre more of a motor building type of shop. If you want to get stuff you can put on, check out www.racingbeat.com and www.mazdatrix.com
Theres also cheap intakes on Ebay for $30. They bolt onto the air flow meter and replace the air box. The stock intake tube isnt THAT bad, so unless your looking for a flashy colored intake tube, then I would get the one on Ebay.
Hope this helps.

PS: Heres one of the ones from Ebay. Its a cheap kit, but worth the price. Dont expect to get much life out of the filter though.

Heres one thats $60, that includes a K&N filter. I consider this one a steal.

thanks tonyturboII, that helped a lot.
well, for now, i guess imma end up just getting the drop in until i can get a second job. heh... any who, yeah, i've tried on ebay a lot, i was just wondering if i should go with the piping or the cone or what. i was thinking, would there be a way to just get the drop in for the box because it gets more air from the set up and then just look for a pipe from the filter to the throttle body or no? hmmm.... i dont know...
that guy at atkins rotary told me about racing beat. i didnt get to see the website yet. have you guys ever been to cardomain.com? pretty cool 7's there.
anyways, thanks for everything, i'll be intouch...
shake it easy,

I dont know a damn thing
iTrader: (1)
I totally disagree with that statement because i cant find the site anymore but there was a test that took 6 stock airbox's and it was found that the s4 airbox was the most resrictive out of all 6...the best thing you can do for your car is get a cone filter and adapter plate....

I'm building a cold air box with ducting to the front passenger FTP. I intend to remove it and add a port. The whole thing will be made of aluminum and should be light. I'm also replacing the factory inlet with aluminum ducting (the plastic has been cracked). these two ports should be easily enough. As for the metal piping to replace the intake hose, if you find one with fins on top and a heat shield on the bottom by the exhaust you shouldn't see any heat rise.
