I got my '90 TurboII installed with the new S5 J-spec engine, and the turbo is incredibly quiet, and I can't even hear the BOV going off when I let off throttle (but the boost gauge does go down to negative when I close throttle)

Anyone else notice this on their TurboII? Is it normal? I was riding in my friend's Eclipse GS-T yesterday, and you can hear the turbo spool up pretty loudly, and the BOV is pretty loud too. I just love the sound of a spooling turbo, it's one of the reasons I got the car, but I don't hear it. Any suggestions?

if you have the stock intake, exhuast, and BOV, you won't hear a thing.

really? That sucks.. his is all stock too I think (or he might have a filter), I figured it'd at least make SOME noise.. oh well.

A cone filter will help you hear it spool some, and a 3'' TID will REALLY let you hear it spool.

Most people don’t want to hear those sorts of noises when they buy a new car, so manufacturers do a lot of work to make sure they can’t. It’s just the small bunch of weirdos like us that actually like those noises...

Yes, when I made my 3" TID and open air vented the BOV w/ a checkvlave my S4 turbo became VERY noticeable. I had stock catback w/ 2.5" RB downpipe and presilencer and the turbo really seemed LOUDER than the exhaust when accelerating.

You couple a check valve to it since otherwise it will suck unmetered/filtered air in. I made my check valve w/ a JDM plastic bevarage container neck/top, a rubber suction cup and some elastic. Worked great, sounded great and looked ghetto in that special JDM/drift way :-)

Others use a checkvalve from the hardware store.

Mazda calls the BOV the Air Bypass Valve.

So a 3" TID, cone filter, and say a Apex Dual Chamber BOV would make a nice sound? I am trying to get a TII, and I really wanna hear that turbo sing!!

careful there... why you to the TID and filter, your boost will rise. If you do exhaust it will rise, and if you don't get more fuel in there you're gonna toast something expensive.

Banzai Racing is in Monroe, MI......about 15 minutes from the Ohio/MI state line. I visit his shop every Monday. I don't have any pictures DEVELOPED of my TID (read: poor college kid with no digital camera).

Remember: This TID yields a 1-2 PSI increase so an FCD maybe necessary to avoid fuel cut, depending on your current mods.

All the air that goes in is being metered still correct? So why wouldn't the engine compensate by adding more fuel like it always does? It adds more fuel when it's cold out (dense air) correct? It adds less when it's hot out (hot air) correct? Why wouldn't it add more fuel as the airflow increases also?

it does. you're only going to screw it up if you have a FCD and you boost past fuel cut, and lean out.

After I put a DP and an intake on my 2nd, I heard the BOV like a somebitch....I guess it takes a little heavier breathing for it to become noticeable.

you're saying the ECU can't handle the programming to force enough air beyond 8.something psi of boost? So if it reads like for example 500 ci of air at 8 psi, it can't handle enough fuel for 600 ci of air at maybe 10 psi?
