There were Mazda rotary-powered cars before the RX-7, several of which, including the R100, RX-2, and early RX-3s had round taillights. Some RX-3s and the RX-4 had hexagonal taillights but in the same basic pattern.
The 81-85 RX-7 had the smoked round lights similar to the 89-91 FC. The 96+ FD in Japan also had smoked round taillights.

holy crap this board is busy! i tried to go through the whole forum, but it's next to impossible, there's SO many threads and **** gets posted so fast! (i guess this site doesn't crash too often?)
anyways, thanks for the replies...now that i look at it, i guess i don't really know if many people do this little conversion b/c all the 2nd gen rx-7s i DO know in detail are few, and just seeing an FC drive buy, you (at least I) can't really tell if it's s4 or s5...so anyways, thanks

s5 lights are getting so rare now is sick. I hope no one with an S5 gets in a mild fender bender and needs some new rear lights, insurence is just going to total the damn car cuz of the price of the lights.

S5 coupe lights will fit on an 88 vert
I bought a set of S5 tailights from an 89 coupe and put them on my 88 vert. I had to do a little cutting but nothing major. It only took about an hour and I had them on. The only drawback is that you won;t have a keyhole but who the hell cares-use the trunk release.
If anybody says otherwise I've got pictures to prove it.
The benifit of this is being able to use coupe tailights on a vert is that they are a whole lot easier to find than S5 vert tailights!
