RX-7 Specialties almost ALWAYS builds their engines with 3MM seals. No one knows why really...I would assume they just want the customer to spend more money, or use worn out rotors.

And that said "high 300s"? I thought it said "low 300s". You're looking at least a turbo upgrade (take your pick....) and MORE fuel. At this point, it would also be a very wise move to go to a standalone EMS.

Several of use here (including me) have good amounts of experience with this ECU. There is also a Microtech forum.

It would be nice to see another high powered FC on the streets of calgary.. however, unless you know what the hell you are doing, know what you need and don't need and how they work, and not depend on what someone else tells you that you need, nor their promise that they can tune your car to make that kind of power, I doubt you will ever see anywhere close to the power you are asking for...

I can assure you.. There are only a handful of FC's in calgary that are making 375 rwhp and up with proof (dyno/time sheets) .. .and none of those vehicles came out of rx-7 specialties..

I dont see why there would be anything wrong with going with ceramic apex seals if he can afford it now, why not? You upgrade as you like knowing you have good apex seals to start..

There is overkill and there is OVERKILL.
Ceramic apex seal give you marginally better resistance to detonation.
Ceramic seals will absolutely kill all internal components when they do let go.
With that said, is it worth the 4x price of the stock OEM Mazda units?
Most people will agree it's not.

Wait...am I missing something? This looks like a case of modding without doing any research. You spent all that money on useless ceramic seals, and you still have a stock turbo. You can't run the stock turbo at 13PSI for long, and even if you did run it at 13 PSI, you would be lucky to make 250 RWHP. If you want high 300's, you need at least a BNR Stage IV turbo and bigger injectors than just 720 secondaries.

There isn't a damn thing wrong with this guy using ceramic seals. Ceramics are MUCH MUCH easier on rotor housings and are more then just marginally better at handling detonation, especially 3mm. Does it make it bomb proof? HELL NO, but if intends to keep this engine a very long time and doesn't make any huge tuning mistakes, this motor will last longer then a standard 2mm stocker as long as the side, corner, oil seals etc last and things were properly clearanced. Even if they weren’t clearanced properly and he will need a rebuild in the future, his rotor housings and apex wont need replacing (again, if there was no tuning mistakes or lack or oil). He's doing things fine, not everyone can build a 10 second terror all at once. He has a good basis for HEAVY mods later when he has more money and the right parts (bigger turbo, all the piping and fuel).

My $0.02, I say lay off the kid and congratulate him on a damn good start.

I'm not saying that ceramic seals are bad, I just think that they were a waste of money for someone shooting for the 300 HP range and that the money could have been spent much more wisely.

^My car gets stored in its own Igloo, next to the dogsled. Dogsleds have to be the best winter beater, because the added benifit is that we can eat the transportation during our 9 month winters, should we need to. So the sled gets a little slower if we lose a dog or two....

i knew there was a little red flag that went up in my head when people started talking about how good ceramic seals are.

yep, RE's right, if they go, look at buying new housings etc.
