Swapping 86' steering wheel for 88' problems?

I've read in the service manuals that installing the steering wheel wrong can set off a code in the steering computer. (the anoying beeping) I want to swap my 86 steering wheel out and put my much nicer 88 wheel in. Has anyone ever had problems with this? Don't mean to sound dumb, but if i'm gonna do it, i might as well do it right. Thanks.

I think this thread belongs more in the second gen forums, but my guess is it shouldn't change anything or do any damage, this is just my guess.

Since when does a car need a computer for steering?

Wheel, column, shaft, ujoints, rack and pinion assembly and tie rods... Or gearbox, pittman arm, linkage, idler arm and tie rods... No computer in the equation.
