sunroof problem
#4
hey i had the exact same problem with my 87. you could hear the motor run but it would not lift at all. i decided to to try to force it open, hoping to just maybe work it open. i ended up breakin the clip that pushes it open. trust me, there is no way to repair it if it is broken or off of the track. i tried dealerships and sunroof shops. the only option was to get a whole new sunroof from a junker car and replace mine with it. it sounds easy, but it was a pain in the ***. it's a lot work, but it is nice having a working sunroof now.

When I press the back button to open my sunroof I just hear the motor running but it doesn't want to pop open. I have to push on the back of the sunroof for it to pop open and then it will slide back by itself.

im having the same problem with my sunroof on my 86. To open it... just gently push on the back of the sunroof just to get it started and it should work from there on out... then to close it.. just push forward gently and that will get it started.. no biggie

Two suggestions: 1. Use the tool to try to open it manually. Then do a very detailed cleaning of the tracks. I am almost willing to bet it is just loaded with crap and will not open.
If you get it moving after a good clean and lube and it appears that only one side is moving then it may well be a broken cabel on the short side.
2. If it opens just a bit and equally on both sides and you have to tap or push it to get it to open, then it is most certainly just clogged with dirt, grime, and sediment. Keep in mind that if it has never been cleaned and lubed it has collected road dust for years.
Once opened and if you can get access to a high pressure air compressor, blow the bejesus out of it and be prepared to clean and vacuum the interior. This done, spray well with WD-40 and completely remove. Use rags and Q tips to clean it out. Repeat this several times until the rags/Q tips appear clean. Then make sure you completely remove the WD. Consider using a spray brake cleaner to make sure you have all the WD off. WD will attract and hold dust like crazy. Lube it with a white lithium lubricant. I use the spray can cuz it is easier to apply in hard to get to places. Do not over spray.
This has worked twice for me on two 7's tops that only opened a tad. Before I got the vert, I would clean lube twice a year and never a problem.
The motors on these very rarely fail, if you hear it groaning or it moves just a bit it is absolutely not a failed motor.

if you can hear it running then the tool wont do jack., i had this prob. what happend is iether the actual sunroof is rusted down ot the track is rusted out or its broken. my suggestion? go to a junkyard get a new sunfoof, motor and all and replace it. the metal cover and interior fabric come off so it wont look gay at all. but yeah, switch em out, it takes about 2 hours the first time. by the way take the tool with you, if you can manually open a sunroof, chances are it'll work by its self.
