stuck at gas station part III...finally have spark

MY car is no longer at the gas station but it still won't start. I had to get it towed home after some young punks decided to rip my convertible top, crawl in, and steal some really dumb stuff....and also terrorize my interior a bit.

I installed a new ECU....it did nothing for me. I installed a new main relay and my computer finally started talknig to the car again. Gas is flowing and im getting a spark. I was SOOO sure that it would start but it didn't. When its turning over i get a spike in the sound (the pitch goes up) about every three seconds. Its just a little pop of a high noise but its more than I had before when it wasn't sparking or getting fuel.

well...im making progress but still confused. Im wondering if i messed up a wire while i was checking signals from the wiring harness going into the ecu with my meter. MAybe I broke messed up my crank angle sensor when i tested that. Is there a reason my timing could go severly off? Could i have damaged the coil packs when i checked them? I just don't get it. I figured I just had one problem...the car ran fine since I bought it in Feb. up until now. Its not like ive had a constant sea of issues. Any suggestionso n what it may be now???? This is getting old SUPER fast. ITs been like 9 or 10 days now since ive driven my car!

It sure sounds like you're flooding, but I'm sure you've ruled that out by now...

Have you checked around for any major vac leaks? An air bypass hose that fell off somehow, something like that?

It's hard to fry your ECU or mess up the wiring if you're just checking voltage inputs from your sensors. Then again, I don't know what all you did

Have you done a compression check yet?

At first i was trying to shove my meter lead in the harness and then I switched to the paper clip method i read in one of your posts in another thread. That worked well actually. Thanks for that tip. I really don't think I hurt anything there though. I checked the coils and CAS according to the hanes manual. Ummm...I really don't know what I could have done.

I didn't rule out flooding. In fact, thats what my first guess was. I wiated 2 hours, pulled the egi fuse, tried it, put the fuse back, tried it, and still nothing. Ill let her sit for the night and see if she fires up in the morning. I thought maybe since i installed a different ECU that might have had a richer fuel mix in the memory it just flooded right away. I don't know if thats even possible. I put my old ecu back in though and its the same deal.

The only way to tell for sure is to pull at least one plug from each housing, and see if they're wet. Most of the time you can also smell it while cranking...

They were wet so i thought it might be that...but i didn't want to add another post about flooding this there are a zillion already.

The main relay is off an s4 and mine is an s5. I was told they are interchangable. Is that true?

sXeVegan - A relay is a relay is a relay I made my own Main Relay (well, it's technically two relays)... If it plugs in, use it.

about the flooding. You can't just let it sit overnight. it will never unflood that way. Take the plugs out & EGI fuse and crank the engine for about 10 seconds.. then wait about 10 or 20 seconds, then crank it again for 10 seconds. put a little bit of oil in each of the bottom holes (1 tsp I think?).. the reassemble. I cranked it for about two seconds before putting the fuses back in to get the oil on all the seals..

Then make sure the garage bay door is open, and put the EGI fuse back in.

good luck

the best way I can tell you to unflood it is to try push starting it. When I bought my FC I paid $300. The guy thought the engine was blown. Turns out it just needed to be unflooded. And it had only 79K on it then. But being a vert it is probably an automatic, or is it? If you have a stick, push start it. Mine was so flooded that pulling the EGI fuse and spark plugs then turning over was not working at all. So I tried it as a last ditch effort, and it took only three pushes to fire right up. Just make sure that you have everything hooked up as normal before you start. When you do this, it spins the rotors faster, which clears the gas out faster, and it does it without using up your starter. It smoked all to **** for a few minutes when it started, but it has survived long distance trips to different states ever since with no issues.

OK sounds like your flooded.
An Easy method is to remove the two EGI fuses closest to the engine bay in the main fuse box.

Crank the engine with the gas fully depressed. This shousl deflood the engine.
Do it for like 10-15 seconds and let off so you don't over do your starter.
Do this 1-2 times.
Plug fuses back i and give it a try.

If that doesn't work then you can pull the fuel relay.
It's on the right side of the steering column under the dash. It is a 5 pin plug I believe.
Pull it and you will cut off fuel from the engine but still have spark so you can fire the engine to clean it out.

It will start up quickly and die because it is using residual gas in the rails. If your good you can plug it in quickly while it rev's up and it will stay running.

If that doesn't work then you have to pull a spark plug from each rotor housing.
Pull the EGI fuses again and crank the engine. It will spit all the excess gas out the spark holes and clean out the engine. You may even want to leave it open air for a few minutes to help.

Next thing to check is your batteries terminals. I have had this leave me going WTF! before. The terminal could be corroded and not making a good connection.

Its fixed! Its fixed! Its FINALLY fixed!

The problem WAS the main relay when i didn't have a spark (and it wasn't getting gas either i assume) and then the car flooded really bad. After about 4-5 hours of unflooding procedures it finally started when I pop started it....it wasn't the first pop start but thats what got it in the end....well that AND pulling the plugs and EGI fuse 50 million times. Ive shut the car off 4 tiems sicne then and its fine. Now I just need to repair my top and im back to 100%. Thanks for all the help everyone...especially Wayne!
