Stock Spoiler?
I purchased my car (86 GXL) without a spoiler, apparently it had been stolen off it as the story goes anyways there are some big *** holes in the back of my car, the question I'm asking, if you can tell form the crappy pic, was it a stock spoiler, it wraps around and extends all the way down to where the bages are and goes around the brake light.
if anyone has pics of a stcok one or one that looks like it might be the same one I had post them
Thanks,
Chris

i didnt have a spoiler for awhile. Than my friend got a 7 and wanted to buy a "ricer" wing.. so i told him to sell me his wing for 50 bucks.. lol YEAH! nice wing in good shape for 50$.. Needless to say, 2 day's after he got his "ricer" wing, it got stolen, lol, he was pist.. but that's what he gets
I'd rather have the Turbo/gtu wing, rather than the Sport wing
bah... i guess it's all preference.

The Sport style (which actually helps aero dynamics)
The 88 GTU Style (which doesn't lower aero dynamics but most people think looks cool- raised wing and all, also found on the 88 T2)
and the 89-91 GTU style (again a raised wing, just slightly larger than the 88 GTU style, and no help what so ever for lowering aero drag).

While the Sport style considerably lowered drag (Cd) typically by .016.
Since an unspoilered GXL using 205/60-15 tires and the baloney slicer wheels has a drag Cd of around .32 (actually just under that, like .319), just putting the sport spoiler on it lowered the CD to around .30. Further drops can be found using the other Aero parts from the Sport such as the underbody panel and the wheel skirts (typically down to .29).
But the GTU style typically raised the CD up around .02, because of the increase in drag brought on by the minor increase in rear downforce.
Funny how you almost never see Mazda publishing anything about the Cd of the coupe after the the GTU style spolier came out. Only about that the spolier helping with downforce.
And while you may think that Cd has nothing to do in the free world, it directly influences how a car handles at high speeds (read above 55 MPH) and freeway gas mileage.
Also remember that those number were based on the S4. The S5 (with all its parts) was actually a little better aero dynamicly drag wise than the S4.

the sport spoiler reduces drag...mazda said upon it's release it was more effective at cutting drag than larger ones...looks very porsche 944..thats why I have one soon to be replaced with RE Amemiya type 4 siting in my basement - it may night be functinal but it looks mean and (and finally my TII swap will back up how the car looks hehe).

No, it was done in tests back in the mid-'90s. The GTU style while it did increase downforce actually raised the drag coefficent.

not to sound like a jerk, but if i saw a wind test pic of all the different variations i've be much more likely to agree. ironically this is what i asked for a few weeks ago to no avail....

None of the pics I've seen so far look like they would be the right one, if you look closely on the original pic you can see some lines where the spoiler came down to the badges, it appears that it wasn't a raised spoiler, but not like the sport, because the sport doesn't wrap around. As far as I can tell it was some thing like a late eightys mustang hatch back spoiler.
I drew some lines on the original pic, to show where the lines are.
P.S.
Thanks for all the help
