Hopefully the turbo survived the incident.

however, your should wait a really, really, really long time before opening it when the car has been run recently. If the bolt feels hot, then the water behind it is really hot as my dumb *** learned yesterday.

I went to put in a new water pump on my 87 GXL today and after I got the old one off I looked at the wate rpump housing and where the impellers go into it it looks like the surface of the moon all erroded and **** !!!!!!!!!!! SO I put it all back together with the new water pump until I can find one that is in good shape to replace my old bad one !!! It still runs hot about 205 on the after market gauge with no A/C on . withit on it goes up . Also all the foam around my oil cooler and rad is like almost gone !!!!! What do you replac eit with ?

Seriously, find a place that sells foam products. They'll have it in sheets in various thickness. Buy, measure, cut, glue. Easy.

I have had overheating problems also, recently I fixed them though. I was able to squeeze one 16" fan in front and one behind the radiator. It cools great and my car runs colder than with the stock belt driven fan unless I start really pushing my car constantly over 5000rpms for over 1-2 minutes. I caution you though, the fans I purchased were the ones available from Autozone, Advance Auto, etc. these draw A LOT of current compared to some racing electrical fans available through summit for about 30 bucks more. Currently I run a 40 Amp relay for both fans and sometimes I have trouble starting the car due to low battery. I suggest looking into some summit electrical fans, be carefull though the blades are pretty sharp.
Good luck,

the thing is, I have almost zero mods so i shouldn't need an electric fan. i think the problem was not with my cooling system after all. the rod on my wastegate valve is bent, the gate is stuck shut, and one of the vacume hoses was disconnected

Had similar problems. Replaced pump, thermostat, hoses, pump housing, foam. The biggest difference came when I replaced all the foam AND got a big bubble of air out of the system (after I though it was all out). I used camper top weather stripping on the oil cooler and between the rad. and frame. Stays at 1/4 in all conditions EXCEPT with the A/C on when it will climb to 3/4.
