The FD's are newer and have more HP stock.
If you asked me the same question.. I'd stick with the FC all the way. Plus you avoid having an auto loan. Unless you had both the fixed up FC and the FD. Best of both worlds.

Owning an FD is like having a really fit bird, incredible lines, great to rag, all your mates drool over her, takes all your money, but there's always that feeling in the back of your mind that one day when you take her out she's going to snap and show you how totally fucked up she really is.

FD motors are notorious for needing MAJOR repairs by 60k. i had a rotary specialist tell me not to bother with the FD unless i plan on dropping in a V8. plus those ******* are expensive!

^ You can search through the 3rd gen forum for hours to get the specifics, but here's the rundown: the motors run higher boost than a T2 and lose compression/blow a seal between 50-70k on average, some more, some less. The oil and water cooling systems are barely adequate for a stock car and need to be upgraded (had recalls, plus the air separation tank cracks), the precat always clogs, and the vacuum lines and solenoids controlling the sequential system fails frequently.
the list goes on and on... it's a sweet car, but it's easy to get in over your head.

FD's are awesome. When I got my FD, it was like nothing I've experienced before. The driving was so smooth, the way it threw you into the seat, the stability at high speeds.. etc. I sold my FC so I can throw money into the FD and I don't really regret it. However, I do one day want to own an FC again. FCs are just so damn cool.

I personaly think the FC would be more "practical" you might say, because:
1. parts are relitivly less expensive and more common then FDs
2. Less complex = easier to work on (in my opinion)
3. fds do look like sex on wheels, but i like the sharp, jagged, and agressive lines of the FC.

I have first hand experience with both cars.
The FD is nice and will get more looks if that is what you want. The interior of the FD is much smaller in terms of driver room. I'm 6'0" and felt cramped at times. The twins are nice and you can't feel turbo lag hardly at all. Working on the FD is a PITA. There is much less room in the engine bay to do anything. They have problems with getting hot easily when modded because of the cramped engine bay. If you do more than just an intake and exhaust you NEED a standalone. Parts are expensive.
The FC is also a really nice car when it is kept up. I've found them to be easier to work on due to the available engine bay room. The FC interior is comfy to me and has enough head room even with the sunroof. Parts are cheaper for the FC which can be nice as both cars require a lot of maintenance too keep in good shape. You can mod the FC for less money than the FD as well since the ignition and cooling system are a bit overbuilt from the factory.
They will both make you smell like gas after driving them. They will both **** you off a time or two with quirks. They are both really fun cars worth owning. Don't buy one that is in rough shape or it will be a nightmare. Have fun in your search!

i just cant bring myself to go from FC to FD. i love FD's but i just think the FC embodies the great era of the sports car that was the late eighties. plus i feel the FC just looks more aggressive with a nice subtle body kit, to extend body lines and make the car look more grounded. i cant compare tech specs with you because idk much about FD's, i just hear they are a pain and a money pit. plus the uncertainty of FC's make them so fun to drive. I like the way they handle compared to FD's, FC's always feel like they are riding right on the edge and feels good. if you want looks on the road then get an FD, if you want a real drivers car stick with your FC.
plus i can never forgive vin diesel and him starting the OMG YOU DRIVE AN RX7?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! then you show the person and they look at you like your a ******* idiot..........

Well i have had 6 Fc's and had a chance to buy a Fd real cheap so i did($6500 93 Vr R1). But now it is costing me like $6000 to have the engine built which is like two t2's(not as fast though. I still have my 10th ae project car and my 88 t2, but i cannot wait to get my Fd back from Rich and Ihor.
The Fd a whole different experience but you need the wallet if something goes wrong. I dont have the wallet and spending every penny i got just to get it finished but once i get it back the engine should be the least of my worries so everything should be alittle cheaper .

Check out the gt35r kit. get the smallest a/r you can find (.85?) with a divided flange. Should get you near 325-350 at around 12lbs with a decently quick spool.

it would seem worth your time to not go into debt for a car that will take even more money
it would be much more attractive to drive a super clean and sexy FC... rather then a dieing and problematic FD

In terms of performance potential, the FD has a slight advantage, but more or less equal to the FC.
The fastest FCs are putting up lap times comparable to the fastest FDs on the Tsukuba circuit.

That's the smart thing to do, as someone who has followed RX-7's since 1987...ugh am I that old...LOL...the FD's have serious reliability problems and they just aren't worth the potential headaches!
