so one of the inputs from the AFM tells the ECU it's O.K. to commence ignition? never heard of that one...thought the ignition system was controlled entirely from the CAS inputs & main relay, with triggering events from the ECU...

On the S4, the AFM must be connected for the fuel pump to work... it has nothing to do with ignition or injection.
So, the fact that the car runs for a few seconds mearly suggests that the fuel rail has fuel in it so the car can run for a few seconds...

This may sound like a little work but take the black cover off the AFM and take a look at the 3 middle connectors to see if the pins are connected to the board inside the afm. if not this could be most of your probs. I had the same prob, resoldered the connectors togetherand adjusted the 2 left pins so they only touch when the flapper door is opened a little bit. Now the car runs really nice and all i have to do know is just adjust the tps. If that pin is not connecting at all THIS WILL CAUSE A PROBLEM. Opening circuit will not continuosly have the proper voltage. My 2 cents

So your saying it won't start at all with the AFM connected, right? But when you disconect it acts like any other rx7 with the afm disconnected? sounds like it might be the AFM, could be dirty, I've had that problem in other cars before, the dirty AFM sends the wrong signal to the ecu and either runs way rich or way lean

my problem was that i have no spark and yet i have fuel (you can hear the hissing)
if the afm is plugged in the car doesnt spark .. weve tested the plugs ...
no matter how hard i tried it wouldnt turn over ... NO SPARK ....
now when i unplug the AFM, it will start ... so im obviously getting spark without the afm plugged in
or else it wouldnt start ... it does die, but it alteast starts with the afm unplugged ...
so i got a another AFM on the way , and if that works then ill post un update. ... if it doesnt work then ill post that as well ....
recap
with afm plugged in i get NO SPARK - thus no start
with afm unplugged i apparently get spark cause the car will start and then just die ...
what else could it be .. why would i get spark without the afm plugged in, but no spark with it unplugged?

Dude, it makes no sense...have you "played" with any of the car's wiring, especially near the ECU? It MIGHT be something in the ECU getting a crossed signal, but again, unless someone proves otherwise, THE AFM INPUTS TO THE ECU HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE IGNITION SYSTEM!...(hope I don't have to eat those words, they're awful big...)
