Starting Problem URGENT!!

Hey... i need some help with a problem that arose today. This morning i woke up and went outside to start my rx7 (1990 gx) it started but stalled not short after.. so i tried re-starting it.. but it sounded as if flooded... after about two un-succesfull tries.. it started to sound "loose" as in there seemed to be no combustion happing at all.. just whatever was being turned by the starter. I let the car sit till about 5 this afternoon and it is still doing the same thing. The car hadn't been sitting because i drove yesterday. What could be the problem?

Pull at least one plug from each rotor housing & see if they're wet- then go with the unflooding procedure of your choice...

If they're not wet, start looking at fuel supply/ignition/compression issues...

Could be your water thermo sensor. Are you getting any error codes?

beeping sounds are usually the indicator of bad things in Fc's, when i ran my car up the curb drifting and whacked my front end good it beeped to let me know the alignment was BAD (understatement there . . ) i dont know if it'd beep for any problems you might have . . for some reason the way you described it it sounds liek it could be a starter/flywheel relations issue who knows could be a ton of things at once or one tiny little pissant problem . . .
P.S. your car looks beautiful in your sig

go under the hood and make sure everythings plugged in. ive had my afm plug fall off twice for no apparent reason.
give every connector a good jiggle, check plugs for fuel, check plug wires and ignition connections etc.
then do unflooding procedure...

let me know how it does

The solution to your flooding problem is a simple one.. first I have to tell you that 2nd Gens are prone to this problem and once its flooded its a bitch to get started.. you would have to push start it on 2nd gear going about 20 MPH... so here is the solution on how to avoid your plugs from getting wet with fuel. You have to get a relay and a toggle switch in order to shut down your car by shutting down the fuel pump first thus by cutting the flow of gas to your engine. The switch will cost you less than 7 bucks but getting a mechanic to install it could run you about $40.00 depending on how much they charge per hour... I have a vert so my relay is underneath my dash whereas the coupe i believe has it near the left rear speaker pillar.. but if you want PM "Phil Fung" and he can fill you in..

Will the fuel pump run just when the engine is running or when you're cranking? Should you hear the pump running when you first turn you key to on, but not yet to start?

Fred, its very simple.. you walk into a dark room and turn on the light switch first right ? Common sense would tell you that you would turn the toggle switch on so it will turn the fuel pump on first before you turn on the ignition.. so when you get to where you are going you would turn off the toggle switch and that in turn will cause the car to shut off because it will stop the flow of fuel... Any other questions.. its just common sense Fred.

The fuel pump does not run when you just put the key to ON.

The fuel pump starts running when you HOLD the key to START.

The fuel pump will keep running IF the engine starts and you let the key return to ON.

The exception is if you install a jumper wire in the fuel pump check connector. Then the fuel pump will run anytime the key is to ON or better.

The car sounds flooded. You might want to verify the sparkplugs spark before doing any unflooding procedures.

Hailer,

Think about this one for a moment..

Is it better to remove and check the spark plugs each and every time the FC floods ?

OR

Simply have a toggle switch to cut off the fuel before you turn off the FC and then turn it on before you go to Ignition ?

I feel the latter of the two is best... NO MORE FLOODING PROBLEMS.

Its kind of like having a Kill switch.. but instead of killing off your electrical it will be your fuel source... pluse its a good deterrent if someone tries to steal your car... they wont be able to get it started. Capisce ?

I'm thinking about it........but I think the question, as I read it, was when does the fuel pump, pump? That is the question I answered.....when does the stock fuel pump, pump.

As a side note I added the part about making sure the sparkplugs are sparking. No sense trying to unflood a car that has no spark. If a person has a persistant flooding problem, then of course he isn't going to check for spark everytime it floods. It's a given it's flooded. But if this is, say, the first time it ever didn't start, then it won't hurt to pull one of the lead sparkplug wires off and lay it on a fender to see if it sparks when the engine turns over.

I even thought about it twice for the double post. humor
