Question Starting Issues

Allright, I'm having some problems with my 1990 GXL. I put some gas in it and started driving home, and about a mile down the road the car starts sputtering...then it dies. So I try to restart it, and it runs for about 5 seconds, then it dies, sputtering all the while. So a friend and myself checked all the regular lame stuf that it might be - plugs, wires, fuel pump, fuel filter, and the fuel line. My six month old NGK plugs were black, so we replaced them, as well as the fuel filter. We checked the fuel delivery and it was fine, and we made sure the plugs were sparking, and they were. Now I still cant get the car to start unless we use some starter fluid, and it blows out a huge cloud of smoke, but it continues to run as long as w spray it in. So I'm guessing its bad gas, and put an additive in the tank, and it still won't start, and I've tried the unflooding things that I read about (pull the fuse, crank 15 seconds, put it back in, rinse, wash , repeat), all with no luck . Any bright ideas guys? Should I just pull and drain the tank, or is there another additive I shoud try? Or is there anything else that it could be? Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks.
