starter problems
i have searched but really didnt come up with what i think would fix the problem. its a 1987 se with a turbo 2 engine and drive train swap. runs perfect. sometimes u have to turn the key a few times b4 the starter will turn the engine over. well now it just stopped completely. so got a different starter from a buddy. still nothing. checked the exciter wire that engages the the starter when u turn the key to start it. and it has 12 volts. i took my screw driver and crossed the terminal and the place where the little wire goes and and it just clicks and makes a bunch of clicks. took them both to auto zone and they both passed just fine. if u try to crank the car over with just the key it does nothing. but they both do the same thing. just click really loud and will not crank the engine. and ideas?

Your starter isn't seeing enough voltage. This could include a few things like defective grounds a bad battery, or the ignition switch has gone bad. Here's a good thread on the topic.

i read the thread. i did the test hailers said to do. and all i got was clicking.how is 12 volts not enough to turn the starter? and i jumped it with a screw driver and just clicked. but i took it to auto zone and they tested it a few times. passed all 3 times. weird stuff.

I have had a dead battery, not voltage wise just an old tired battery, just click at starting. It would only click once. Everything would power up fine, but it would just go click at startup as if it couldn't put out the amps required to start it.
Moral of the story, have the zone test your battery as well.

with a ratchet u can. its building good compression. if u jump it with a screw driver it just pops a bunch and wont actually turn the engine. sounds like its popping in and out just not spinning the starter head you know. i had my buddy over and he was turning the front of the engine as i was trying to jump the starter to see if maybe it was just hitting a tooth on the fly wheel. my next thing i guess im gonna try is a new starter. but its just weird since the 2 i have tested just fine.
