Ok,

What the hell is it?


Just got done a clutch job, flywheel/engine does turn just a tiny bit , engine and flywheel will turn by hand smoothly.

I put a new transmission in and a new ACT 4puck clutch, i'm thinking the bendix spring in the starter isn't engaging the flywheel all the way? any info on this?

Check the dumb things first. Are the starter wires on good? Might just be getting low juice (check battery as well). Also, make sure the main ground strap was bolted back onto the tranny/engine. Shops forget that a lot.

You can usually see with a flashlight down near the slave cylinder. If they forgot that one, they probably forgot to plug the one up on the firewall near the center of the engine bay.

I did the all the work, and yeah both grounds are in place. I also tried charging the battery. I'm going to check the starter wire tommorow, make sure it isn't grounded or touching anything.... If that doesn't work I got a friend that can get me a good price on a starter.

The one ground is in the firewall and the other is bolted to the slave cylinder.

gosh.. dont know then. Hopefully someone else does.

I dont recommend it fully, but some people say they will get hung up. I've heard they can be fixed with a nice hard whack! Who knows.. worth a try??

Is that where that one is supposed to go? I just put it around one of the engine to tranny bolts, but that would make more sense...

It does get a good enough contact there right?

where is the clicking coming from? more than likely its a bad conection, check all of them and put some grease on the contact parts. it should work fine

I had a similar problem a while ago. Starter worked just fine all the time, then one day all I ever got was *click click* and nothing, turned over a bit once and a while but would never start. The click was just the solenoid on the starter trying to turn the starter but the armiture inside was fried. You might wanna check out a local starter/alternator shop and see if they can do a rebuild. Rebuilding it would probably be cheaper if all you need is a few parts, and most places have decent warranties

I had the click click problem last week. I rebuilt the starter and now it's fine.

I actually got a chance to rebuled a few starters..it could also be it needs the dirt shaken outta it..cuz if dirt comes in between the armateur and the brushes u could just hear click click click...also when brushes wear down sometimes it could act as carbon lockup..(try hammerin the start a bit while someone is cranking it),this is assuming the starter was working before the work done...solenoid could be fried...honestly i havent seen many armateurs burnt out...im pretty sure its brushes or solenoid...could get rebuild kits from ur local automotive shop....

yep, that's what the guy told me. That the brushes had worn down.

yeah, I forgot about the dead brushes too, you shoulda seen the armiture though, it was covered in black film, looks like it was char broiled.

Mine just did this today. Well actually it had been doing it since I got the car but it would always start after a couple of attempts. Today it gave up completely... new starter time for me I guess.

it's either:

1) starter not grounded properly

2) the solenoid switch does not make the contact between the B (battery) and M (motor) terminal, which prevents the motor from being energized

Second gens have a magnetic switch which is attected to the postive lead of the starter coming from the battery. It looks like a small black box with one wire coming off of it going to a harness. I once broke that when I was replacing battery cables. The symptom I had was, the start would draw currnt an make a single click sound, battery voltage would drop to just be low 12volts, but nothing happened. I had to solder the wire bcak onto the magnetic switch, still have not found a replacement. P.S. Take the starter out and have it tested before you buy a new one. That would have saved me some money. I thought my started was bad too, problem was still there after new starter was in place. Talk about being pissed off.

This was the resolution, I was working on it tonight and found one of the three ground wires not connected to the tranny. Bolted that sucker right up and it started fine.... Now I've got some radiator issues.
