The Starion intercooler may be physically larger but the stock intercooler has more core area for boosted air to pass through. Also the stock intercooler has fins within the core tubes to further help efficiency. A good design. Just a little small and in a terrible location. I took 2 starion intercoolers, cut them apart, welded them together into 1 unit, and made new endtanks. Big intercooler that works relatively well for the price which was about $150 total. Don't buy the Starion units off of ebay. Go search your local junkyards and pick them up for around $30. Thats all the ebay guys do. I got both of mine and all the custom work and welding for far less than what those individual units sell for on ebay. Mine may not be as good as some of the big aftermarket units but it also wasn't as expensive.

Does anyone know how much boost the Starion intercooler can handle? The previous owner of my TII gave me one along with the car, but I heard the Starion intercooler wasn't a very good upgrade.

You can to this with the stock IC's too. I have two sitting in the garage waiting for a burst of enthusiasm and a bit of free cash...

my friend has a greddy turbo kit (15g) on his miata, and he has a starion frontmount. he runs up to 15-16 psi and the intercooler seems to be cooling well enough...

Yeah im guessing you dont have a stock intercooler, becuase why would you use a starion intercooler for a stock tII? You best bet for stock boost levels is to go with a factory intercooler.
