Split air pipe

How easily should air pass through the split air pipe on an S4 na? I've got barely any air getting through when I blow from manifold back.

I just checked mine that was on my s5, it was really hard to blow though from the air pump to the exhaust and I could not blow from exhaust to air pump. So I guess that’s how it should be.

I did not realize that there was anyone one the forum with a FC that was so close to Highland, if you need help working on your car I might be able to help you out sometime.

You don't get much of any flow thru the split air pipe on a stock car. Most of the time no air goes thru that pipe.

The manual has a procedure for checking flow thru that pipe. You do a given thing they ask, and the flow increases. That should happen. What you can do is remove the split air pipe from the converter and put it in a pan/pot of water. Then follow the FSM procedures. Look at the bubbles in the pot of water before following the procedure in the FSM. Then look after you follow the procedure in the FSM. More bubbles is the result. Been there, done that a long time ago.

Air will flow thur that pipe to the converter. But certain criteria (sp) have to happen. Like actually driving and the position of the TPS/foot pedal and amount of time the car has been driven.

Air flows all the time thru that pipe when in fifth gear. It's stated in the FSM. Thats what the Split Air Solenoid does in life.

Most of the air to the converter, at idle is thru the ACV to the exhaust ports (located prior to the 02 sensor, FYI).

If doing a emissions check by your local state inspector, he will check the emissions at two speeds in Tx. One check at 15mph and the other at 25mph. During those tests, at those speeds, that split air pipe, at sometime, will deliver air and at the same time the exhaust ports will get airpump air.. Depends on *stuff*. Sometimes no air will be delivered by the split air pipe and all by the Port air (exhaust ports).

After driving (more or less steady speeds) for over 120 seconds, give or take, no air goes to the converter by either passage. It all gets dumped overboard into the right front fenders silencer. That's if your not in fifth gear. See above for fifth gear air.

ON a NON TURBO car, if you have a air fuel meter of any sort at all, you can look at the afr at idle (engine fully hot) and it should read lean. LIke over 14afr. But if on a NON TURBO car, you remove the blue plug from the Relief Solenoid, you'll immediatley see the afr go rich, like 13.0 give or take. That change in afr is due to de-energizing the Relief solenoid and causing the airpump air to be dumped in the right front fender.

TURBO cars are a bit diff in that respect. The above is not applicable to turbo engines. There's another method.

I'd be wary about that. I've caught myself getting confused b/t the turbo and non turbo cars.
Like that deal where you remove the elect plug from the Relief solenoid. That will cause the airpump air to be dumped into the fender on non turbo BUT on turbo cars it does not apply. Won't happen.

Gotta pull the Switching solenods vacuum hose off the ACV for that to happen on a Turbo.

MY God. There's a Pole on the pole in F1 Bahrain Grand Prix! Robert Kubica.
