Speedometer repair?

Ok, my speedometer is reading about 10mph high at 60 (when I'm doing 60, it's reading 70). I took it to the dealer (big mistake), and they told me that the cable and where the cable goes into the transmission are fine, so it's probably the speedometer itself. The person that I bought the car from was having trouble with the speedometer, so I'm pretty sure that's it. Is there anything I should try to fix it, or should I just try to find one out of another car? Is there any way to switch the odometers?

Thanks,
Stephen

Yep, but it is illegal to put in a odometer that has a lower mileage than the one you took out. If there is a problem in the guage itself, it would probably be a worn gear and would be impossible to fix.
You have to swap the whole gauge cluster, about a 20 min job total.
I doubt it is the speedo. Do you have any different rear end gear ratios, or do you have a different size than stock size tire on it?

The speedometer comes out seperate from the rest of the gauges, but I haven't done it yet. I'd be putting the odometer that is in my car right now in the car, so it wouldn't really matter. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

My 89 is doing the same thing and has been since it was new. It was just recently that I realized it was off. I wonder if it is a common problem with 89's?

Remove the cluster and take it to an instrument repairer. These guys can repair and/or recalibrate speedos. It's not a difficult job but specialised equipment is required.

Often when a speedo is off it is off more at a speed rather than the whole range.

For example the Speedo in my 'vert is off 1% at 80+, but it is right on at 40-60mph.

I have this problem on my 88, except mine was a bit more serious!
First, the speedo would make grinding noises and go up to 140mph by itself (when I'm doing 40). Then suddenly one day the speedo stopped working all together, and the odometer/trip meter stopped turning too. Now I just go the same speed as everyone else...

Anyone know what this is? Cable or cluster? There was a vibration sound above 50mph before it busted...

Speedometer cable.

Where is the cable located and how do you get at it. The 2 gauges in my 84 the do not work are the speedo and milage.

You would want to post that question in the 1st gen section, not the 2nd gen.
