Some questions for 2nd gen owners

Recently, I have gone to a championship drift showoff and have fallen in love with the 2nd gen Turbo II Rx-7's. I used to be a crx fan but a couple of people have told me some bad stories about them. Well, I have a couple questions that i would like to be answered being new to the Rx-7 community and would be glad if i could get some answers.

1st - other than bad gas milage what are some other con's of the TurboII's.

2nd - If i were to get a TurboII about how much money would i have to spend to make it a reliable daily driven car with about 300 whp. ( Considering the fact that the engine has about 150,000 miles on it. )

3rd - also I've heard that exhaust back pressure is a major issue with rotaries and would like to know some good exhaust set ups i could run for the most hp.

4th - What is a reasonable Price for a TurboII in fairly good condition with about 150,000 + miles on it. ( Being a California Car )

A 150K mile TII is probably worth less than 1500.. You're going to have to spend alot of money fixing it up, and even more to make 300HP. I'd say about 7K in mods and restoration.. The gas mileage sucks also. backpressure isn't an issue unless you have bad cats, just like any other old car.. you're into drifting and you like CRXs? FWD is the antithesis of drifting..

1. on all rx7's some small electrical crap. like window/wiper switches and some cluster switches. not a real biggy if you can solder. with any car you get with age might need a rebuild or new engine sooner than later.

2. if you talking about maitaniace. they arent that bad. but the more hps you have the less gas mileage you will get and more likely to break something if you beat on the car daily. but if properly taken car of , driven normally , the rx7 can be a pretty relaible car. just follow the how to buy in the F.A.Q on the top of this forum, but basically , change all the fluids, belts, new tires, tranny oil, plugs, wires, clean all grounds, air filter, fuel filter, grease , the works ,, normally stuff you should always repair and replace when buying a used car.

3. im pretty sure that most of the people living in states where there are no emmisions run with out cats and go straight into a single muffler. they sell some really nice hi flo cats for the people in the "other"states. i think there is more of a problem with boost creep than anything. alot of people port their waste gates to solve or help this problem

4. price is hard to say .,. i have seen turbo 2's for from 500- 11,000 depending on condition , mileage, mods, that type of stuff. currently im in line to buy a t2 for about 3000.00 with 75k miles and a few mods in great condition minus the keyed paint . but other than that the car is great . if you looking to score one cheap , try localy and try to find some one who doesnt know what they have and offer then a little bit of money . thats how i found my first fc. or try auto trader.

hope this helps a little bit

3K is a pretty good deal for that car.. I have emissions in my state also, but it's easier to pay someone to pass you than to buy a high flow cat, airpump, and other POS components that will be taken off the car the day after testing if you're serious about performance..

Thanks for the responses:

As for the maintainice I am a really big car Enthusiest and have been once since i was like 9 now im almost 16 and this will be my first car. In total i have about 6,000 dollars that my dad can give me and I'm sure im gonna have a part time job. From what i have heard 150,000 miles on a Rotary engine is like 1 million miles on a piston engine... right. Anyways i think that 1500 for a decent condition Turbo II sounds about right after looking through the auto trader. If I were to get one, my question is that is it better get it rebuild and then mod it or what... thanks for the replies!!

150K on a TURBO rotary is still high, N/As tend to last a tad bit longer, especially when mods come into play..
