So i was making my exhaust last night...

...maybe i should back track a little. Anyway, the after market, dual exhaust that was on the car was basically like a N1 style muffler but with more muffling, yet still looked completely straight through. It was decently quite but the one muffler was bent all funny from the previous owners end and the damn thing was impossible to fix.

Anyway, i decided to bust out the welder last night and do something about it (mostly because the short bus muffler was starting to rattle). I figure that sense the mufflers looked basically straight through and weren't loud, a straight pipe couldn't be too bad either, plus the turbo usually helps things. My old DSM was set up the same way and was real quite. so after about 8 hours of cutting, welding, test fitting, welding, etc (i didn't have a chop saw.... chop saw>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>hack saw.)

At any rate i fired her up and my dog ran for ******* cover.

Loudest god damn thing ever. Not even "hey thats kinda loud, but sounds cool" loud. No. It was "holy **** i think i just had a bowel movement because my car hit the brown note" loud. hmm....so that idea failed. I was looking around my shop for SOMETHING to muffler this thing and i had one of those baffled insert things from Summit Racing you can put into headers to be sound legal for racing. But it was a 3" and my exhaust was 2-1/2". So i took spare 3" piping and made a section piece and tapered fit. But i still had more test fitting the entire exhaust again and welding. Its was 3am and i have to work (were i am now). so i just went home.

Any ideas why the hell the wee little baffles work so damn well? I mean, i've taken plenty of fluids classes, but we never got to actually play around with anything physical.
