Hehehe, this is true.

The main thing that I have noticed in the car world is that most people are not very accurate about the total amount that they spend on their hotrods. I don't think that the misinformation is intentional, but for some reason the "little" things like fasteners, wires, sealant, polishing, welding, etc. never make it into the stated cost of a mod. I have been very accurate in accounting for all the costs in my cars, but it is difficult to relate my costs to others because of variables like my labor, free or reduced labor from friends, sponsorships, etc.

Anyway, back to the original question, I have spent over $30K USD on my 88 for go-fast mods, and a little over $1K on the 84.

i could've gone around the world, or put down money on a log cabin in Tasmania,
but instead i spent it on a 15 year old car
i didn't want to read that, i just wrote a $3700 check for a motor!
i could have gone to eurupe or japan for weeks

I have about $15k US in my TII convertible. That includes the cost to convert it to a turbo. Right now it is down for a new rebuild, got about 2500 miles out of the last engine, ran a little lean.

Lats month I added up some items off the top of my head. I came up with Mods and maintinence 13k last year alone! including payments and insurance right at 20k. Last year alone!! And I am still not done. I have about 3 grand left to spend on just parts before I am at my goal.

ecu 2,000
tuning 1,500
brakes 1,000
exhaust 900
stereo 600
gauges 500

This has been ongoing for the last five years... most of those numbers are just pretty quick, rough guesses... I spend too much money.
Oops, I forgot that I was doing a 20B swap... so here is some more stuff to add:

6-puck clutch disk from clutchnet - 177
FJO wideband - 962 (but I split this with a friend)
2 more leading coils - 60
1 more 1680cc injector - 97.33
flow matching 3 1680cc injectors - 83
new silicon hoses - 69.85
pack of 10 B10EGV spark plugs - 59.31
J&S knock sensor - 350
J&S Dual Display - 183
17 lb flywheel - 355
new wiring harness for haltech - 50
parts for 20b rebuild - 1340.50
engine - 2500
battery relocation kit & hoodpins - 73.35
Fluidyne radiator - 412
Hybrid IC - 580
Rebuild and porting w/ custom fuel rails - 1500
random shipping charges - 276
motor mounts - 450
new UIM and TB - 160
Custom TB adapter - 175
Flow testing and cleaning primary injecots - 96.50

Subtotal = $8,890 Since December...
Prolly spend another grand before its running... then $600 on tires, and another 600 on a rollcage. By the end of the summer, my car's grand total will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 35-40k. Next year, I'm doing a single turbo swap on the 20B, adding a Geforce tranny, custom rearend... so that'll be close to another 10k... ouch. I could have bought about 100,000 Kit Kats for that money

damn, I'm selling my 90 gxl t2 tommorrow and buy one of those civic hybrids. j/k

But seriously, I've dumped about $6000 into mine, that is not counting the money other people's insurance companies have sunk into it, then it would be closer to $12000. I'm not even including the price of the car.

Let's see.
90 Gxl busted front bumper cover w/105K miles -$800
one high speed crash in a curve on wet roads -$2000
new clultch -$500
tranny -$400
one drunk little rich **** who paid me off not to sue him when he hit me +$4900
to fix the damage the drunk **** caused-$1000
new stereo system -$1000
new 17in wheels and slightly used pilot sx tires -$1000
j-spec series 5 T2 conversion -$2300
NPR FMIC and piping -$500
FCD = FREE!!
the SHITLOAD of metric tools I had to buy TWICE, cuz they got stolen once, to be able to work on my car -$800
turbo 2 aluminum hood and repaint -$700

What insurance companies have paid-
close to $2800 from 2 break-ins to my car
approx $4000 from the three accidents I've had the past year(not my fault!! all were dumbasses that didn't realize little black cars are allowed to drive at night)

I also threw in $900 to one of the body shops fixing my car for a new paint job.

Not to mention the close to $1200 in parts I simply could not find any other place than the Mazda dealer.

HOLEE **** ALL THAT EQUALS ALMOST $18000 into my car!! That's 22.5 times what I paid for the car. Then again I'll swear I have the nicest FC in OKLAHOMA, which isn't saying much.

Amen.

I actually figured it out on paper a while back. I bought the car built for $8000, and after adding it up, it had a bit over $20,000 in mods at that point. A good deal I say Since then, I have spent at least $5000 more in repairs and mods. Too much is never enough...

I spent about 1000bucks doing preventative maintenance to my 91 FC (new clutch/flywheel/tranny fluid/plugs&wires/paint job/brakes) just to make sure everything would be in perfect condition for modding and now I have to sell the car b/c I lost my job. Would have cost less if I knew how to install or change the stuff myself but I didn't.

Oh well........Hey anyone want another second gen? I got the perfect one for you!

Bought my '92 TII for 15K Euros.

Since then:

New clutch/bearings
New tires (SportContacts)
New brakes
Meticulous service/tune-ups every 5K km

These sum up to about 1100-1200Euros

And:

Aiwa MP3R + speakers
K&N Doublecone
Custom exhaust
Interior stuff (Momo, Sparco etc)

These sum up to another 1200Euros

In the immediate future (about a week from now): new rotors, new oil lines so another 500Euros

So in total, about 15K+1200+1200+500=18K euros
